Over the last week, the talk of the boxing world has been the announcement that Floyd Mayweather Jr is taking 1-2 years off following his victory over Shane Mosley. Now, this wasn’t some rumor or speculation by boxing fans and critics.
This announcement was a video admission by Floyd Jr during his appearance with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. However, Floyd’s Uncle Roger adamantly says that Floyd Jr won’t retire. In fact, Uncle Jeff and some of Floyd’s contemporaries say Floyd won’t be taking time off. So who are we supposed to believe?
Did Floyd Jr use a kid with cancer to further his agenda? Floyd Mayweather Jr During an appearance with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Floyd Mayweather Jr announced on video that he was going to take 1-2 years off. Now, Floyd Jr was sitting right next to a 17 year old kid suffering from Hodgkin’s disease, which is a type of cancer. The kid said that Floyd Jr was his favorite athlete and hero. He also said that he wanted to see Floyd Jr fight Manny Pacquiao. When the interviewer asked Floyd Jr about a fight with Manny, Floyd Jr smiled and said that he was going to take some time off and possibly pursue other charity opportunities. This announcement spread faster than a ‘wild fire’ and soon the entire Boxing universe was talking about it. Many people were questioning how Floyd Jr could say this after all the talk of him fighting Manny Pacquiao. Others, like myself, blasted Floyd Jr for using a kid with cancer to further his boxing agenda. Ultimately, many critics called Floyd Jr a ‘coward’. However, there were some Mayweather faithful who held out hope that Floyd Jr was just running off at the mouth and not serious.
