Floyd Mayweather Junior informed boxing fans that a one to two year hiatus could be the next move in his boxing career during a Make-A-Wish event.
Though his trainer and Uncle Roger Mayweather seems to think Junior is full of hot air with several million dollars on the table for a bout against Manny Pacquiao, what would Floyd’s re-retirement mean within the context of the boxing world?
One result would be the fortification that Floyd ducks any fighter that legitimately endangers his undefeated record of 41-0 at great lengths. Four years after his by-pass of Antonio Margarito to fight Carlos Baldomir and just a few months after mismatches against an under-sized Juan Manuel Marquez and aged Shane Mosley, many fans and pundits insist that Mayweather Junior is all about the path of least resistance.
Mayweather may walk away with a zero in the loss column, but he will never be considered an all-time great like Muhammad Ali or Ray Leonard, men who fought on all comers. Instead he will leave a legacy of incredible talent tinted with extreme cautiousness.
An ill-timed exit would also serve as a huge slap in the face to boxing fans who purchase the tickets and pay per views which fund Mayweather’s multi-million dollar paydays, as they will be left forever pondering who was the better pugilist – Mayweather or Pacquiao.
Pacquiao – Mayweather is the hottest potential fight in the sport of boxing, nothing comes close to the desire of fans to see this event. If it does not come to be, there will be a huge void in the world of boxing. No other mega match-ups are waiting in the wings, nor will there be any for many years as the sports reloads with new stars.
We can only hope that Mayweather’s public comments were just an ill-timed and tasteless slip of the tongue – considering he was at an event honoring a very ill teenager, not a press conference.
