Wisanu Pornobnum looked tough and prepared as he tipped the scales yesterday for his fight against Cebu’s Z Gorres.
After weighing in at 115.5 pounds during the official weigh-in, Pornobnum did not mince his words.
“This is my chance and I’m not going to waste it,” the Thai, who holds a 16-5-1 win-loss-draw record with three knockout, said through an interpreter. “Gorres is a well-respected boxer here in the Philippines but I am going to win this fight at all cost.”
Gorres, who weighed in at 116lb, and Pornobnum will square off tonight in a 10-round duel in the SGG Sports Promotion boxing spectacle “Fight For Fame” at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.
At stake
The winner of the fight will earn the right to challenge Masayuki Arinaga for the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) super-flyweight title.
“The last time I fought (in Manila) was terribly bad. I received a lot of criticisms from the Manila media and that served as a lesson to me. I was too cautious of my opponent’s head and dirty game, that is why I failed to make an overwhelming victory,” Gorres said. “But that will not happen in front of my fellow Cebuanos. I will prove to them that I got what it takes to become a (world) champion.”
Undercard
Also in the card is the championship encounter between Cebu-based boxers Michael Domingo, an SGG Stable fighter from Davao, and Rolly Lunas, an RWS Stable fighter who is from Manila. Their bout is for 12 rounds with Domingo’s RP bantamweight title at stake.
This will be Domingo’s first title defense since winning the belt over Joel Bauya last July 30 in San Andres, Manila.
Domingo tipped the scales at exactly 118lb, while Lunas was two pounds lighter.
Other 10-round events are Cebuano Rocky Fuentes (113lb) versus Bert Gawat of Manila (112lb), Robert Allanic (116lb) vs. Roy Doliguez of Manila (116lb) and Rollen del Castillo (104.5lb) vs. Alex Aroy (106).
Tickets are at P100 each for general admission, P150 lower box, P250 for ringside and P500 for VIP/sponsor seats.
