June starts the Boxing summer off with a bang. Undefeated Yuri Foreman and former 3 time champion Miguel Cotto are set to do battle on Saturday June 5th at Yankee Stadium. Both fighters made weight today as Foreman came in at 154 and Cotto came in at 153.5. Both fighters look in great shape and ready to fight on Baseball’s hallow grounds. The ‘Stadium Slugfest’ is for Yuri’s WBA light middleweight title. The undefeated champion is 28-0, but has never fought on a stage like this. “It will be a special moment for sure.When I think about it I have a little bit of butterflies. But it’s something I’ve been getting ready for all my life, that entrance when I make my ring walk.” Foreman, Philboxing Cotto (37-2) has plenty of experience in championship fights on the grandest of stages. Although he lost in his last fight, the experience of fighting Manny Pacquiao has to give him comfort and a sense of urgency. “I don’t know what to expect, but I think having Manny can only help. Manny is a great motivator and a great teacher, and I would expect an improved Cotto” Bob Arum (ESPN) Prediction Because this is Yuri’s first ‘big-time’ fight, I believe the pressure will be too much. In addition to the incredible atmosphere, I also think Cotto’s offensive firepower will be too much for Foreman. I don’t think Cotto has lost a step. I don’t think the wars have taken a toll. Plus, I think Cotto recognizes the urgency of needing a win. Another loss could knock Miguel into Boxing obscurity and end his career. However, if Cotto wins then he could end up in a rematch with Manny Pacquiao who embarrassed him last November. Miguel Cotto has everything to gain and a career to lose. This despratation and determination should give him an edge along with the experience of being in severl championship fights. I’m taking Cotto with a 9th round TKO.
