The World Boxing Association has stripped Shane Mosley of their welterweight title and now recognizes Vyacheslav Senchenko as their full title holder according to reports. Senchenko (30-0) was the WBA regular champion as Mosley was recognized as the “super” champion.
According to Boxingscene.com, Shane was stripped because he never agreed to terms with the WBA for the fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Apparently, the WBA sent Mosley a letter expressing interest in him fighting for WBA titles in the near future but still decided to strip him of the title.
It was well documented that Floyd Jr didn’t want to pay the sanctioning fees thus not fighting for the title. But Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer made it clear that they were working with the WBA on Shane’s role with the title. In addition, Shane publicly denounced Floyd’s disinterest in the belt and said that these world titles are important. But now we get this news that Shane is being stripped because he didn’t work out the details before the fight.
Apparently, neither man really cared about this WBA title. Well, at least some fresh talent has the belt now. Senchenko will defend his title against Charlie Jose Navarro on August 30th in the Ukraine. Let’s hope that Senchenko is more committed to brining honor to this belt and the sport of boxing rather than “selling out” for the money like his predecessors.
