WHAT was supposed to be routine sparring turned into a nightmare for ALA Boy Donnie “Ahas” Nietes as he suffered a cut, forcing him to back out of the Fight For Fame promotion on Oct. 29 at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.
In an unfortunate accident, Nietes got hit on his right eyelid by an errant elbow by stablemate Along Denoy.
Nietes was slated to trade blows with former WBC international mini-flyweight champion Armand dela Cruz in the Sammy Gello-ani card. In their place, top miniflyweight contender Rocky Fuentes of ALA stable will face RP No.7 flyweight Bert Gawat.
Unknown to many, the stocky Fuentes has been campaigning in the 112 pounds category as he has outgrown the 105lbs mini-flyweight division.
The iron-fisted Fuentes, who rose to prominence when his punches caused the demise of John Eman Juarez in only his fourth fight in 2003, is fresh from a successful campaign abroad when he drew with former WBA champion Chana Porpou-in Thailand.
One-round win
Fuentes also won three of his four fights in Indonesia, the most significant of which was his one-round KO over Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation rated Anis Ceunfin.
Z Gorres headlines the card against another Thailander in an OPBF eliminator bout while Ala Boys Robert Allanic and Rollen del Castillo will also see action.
