July 10th could turn out be a “big” day for Filipino boxing. It was recently announced that Nonito Donaire will join fellow Filipino boxers Bernabe Concepcion and Eden Sonsona for what’s shaping up to be an excellent fight card on July 10th live from Puerto Rico. Concepcion will fight in the main event of the night as he takes on Juan Manuel Lopez for the WBO featherweight title. Donaire and Sonsona will participate in fights on the undercard.
Donaire Ronnie Nathanielsz of Philboxing.com, reports that Donaire’s fight will be broadcasted in the Philippines on the ABS-CBN network. However, his opponent has yet to be determined. According to Nathanielsz, Nonito was really excited about the fight and recognizes the importance of it. The Filipino Flash (23-1) is coming off an impressive KO victory over Manuel Vargas on February 13th.
Sonsona Sonsona’s opponent has already been announced. Eden (21-5) will take on the veteran Genaro Garcia (36-8) in a 10 round event. If Sonsona comes out victorious, he will get a title shot against the WBO bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vasquez Jr provided that Vasquez can defeat Zsolt Bedak on May 29th. Sonsona last fought on the undercard of the Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight. He came out victorious with an 8th round TKO over Mauricio Pastrana.
Concepcion The main attraction of the night is the fight between Bernabe Concepcion vs Juanma for the WBO fetherweight title. Juanma is undefeated and a huge favorite to come out victorious. Both Concepcion and Lopez are coming off victories from earlier this year.
Juanma dominated former champion Steven Luevano in their January fight at Madison Square Garden. Lopez scored a 7th round TKO due to the ref stopping the fight. In his last fight, Concepcion earned a Unanimous Decision in a solid performance over Mario Santiago on February 13th in Las Vegas. The judges scored the fight 98-91, 96-93, 97-92 in favor of Bernabe.
