There’s been a strange silence coming from the mouth of Floyd Mayweather Jr. It’s almost three weeks since he dismantled Shane Mosley. For the first few days after the fight, Floyd Mayweather Jr swept the nation with interviews and demands.
However, we haven’t heard really anything directly from “Pretty Boy” since then. In the sport’s biggest soap opera, Manny Pacquiao has publicly but the ball back in the court of Floyd Mayweather Jr and his team by saying he would come down to 14 days as a cut-off date for drug testing. The question is “Will Floyd Mayweather Jr accept?”
Manny Pacquiao has shown the public that he is willing to compromise to make this fight happen. Now, it’s Floyd Mayweather Jr’s turn. Unfortunately, I don’t see it happening. I believe Floyd Mayweather Jr will demand the drug testing to be random all the way up to the fight.
Now, the recent buzz going around is that the cut-off date for Floyd Mayweather Jr and Shane Mosley was 18-19 days before the fight. I have placed inquiries with Keith Kizer of the Nevada State Athletic Commission and the USADA. When I receive an official comment, I will report it here. Until then, we will have to take Bob Arum’s word that this is when the cut-off dates were.(source: Boxingscene.com)
If Arum’s report of the cut-off date is accurate, then Floyd Mayweather Jr shouldn’t have a problem with agreeing to a 14 day cut-off date. Unfortunately, I still don’t see it happening. Floyd Mayweather Jr can spin this around and say that Manny Pacquiao should be fine with random drug testing especially if the cut-off date is further out.
Like I said before, these negotiations will be very dramatic and the fans will be jerked around every step of the way. But for the next step, it’s Floyd Mayweather Jr’s turn to compromise and show the public that he has their interest and truly desires to make this fight happen.
