Amir Khan plans return to ring this summer after superb American debut

Khan?s handlers are negotiating with television companies and opponents to hold the contest on July 31 or August 7, with the 23-year-old having told his team his wish is to fight again before the start of Ramadan.

Freddie Roach, Khan?s trainer, insisted yesterday that ?burnout was not a worry?, despite his fighter only having just completed his first victory in America, over Paulie Malignaggi, last Saturday.

However, the date will need to be confirmed within two weeks, according to Asif Vali, Khan?s manager, so that he can return to training camp at the Wild Card Boxing Club, in Los Angeles, by the end of May.

Khan may have bad memories of fighting just after Ramadan, which entails long periods of fasting, as it was early in September 2008 that he suffered his only loss in 24 professional fights, a first-round knockout to Colombian Breidis Prescott.

The 23 year-old returned to The Gloves Community Centre in his home town of Bolton on Wednesday, the gym where he reportedly invested ?700,000 and where teenagers can come to box for ?1 a time.

Khan said: ?I really enjoyed the experience of fighting in New York, and I?m looking at my next fight in the US being in Las Vegas. It?s somewhere I?ve always wanted to fight, but we?re not going to rush it. That time will come.?

Asif Vali, Khan?s business manager, told Telegraph Sport: ?What happens now will depend on television dates. If it is going to work for us as we want it to, we should be in a good position to know exactly what is going to happen in two weeks? time, because Amir?s plan is to have his next fight before Ramadan. That is the way Amir wants to do this. He wants to finish just before Ramadan and then adhere to the month.?

Meanwhile, Ricky Hatton congratulated Khan on his victory ? they are the only two opponents to stop Malignaggi ? and ruled himself out of ever facing Khan as a rival in a ring. ?I?d rather promote Amir than fight him,? said Hatton.

Hatton revealed two weeks ago in Las Vegas that he is 13st 9lbs ? 51 pounds ? above the limit for the welterweight division Hatton dominated two years ago.
