PROMOTER Gary Shaw has hit out at the way Nonito Donaire?s career is being handled after a rematch between the Filipino and Shaw?s Ausssie-Armenian Vic Darchinyan fell through. Prolonged negotiations for the fight eventually fell down over the issue of international TV rights and Shaw is not happy.
?I didn?t think Top Rank were being fair to me and Vic on the split,? Shaw stated. ?We were negotiating for over two months, but they were spending all their time with Manny Pacquiao or Kelly Pavlik, paying no attention to Nonito Donaire. I understand why ? Donaire weighs 115lbs and doesn?t bring in the money that Pacquiao or Pavlik do.
?Vic eventually emailed me and said, ?Forget the fight?. Now he wants the winner of [Yohnny] Perez-[Abner] Mares at 118 or [Rafael] Marquez-[Israel] Vazquez at 126.
?Donaire got a great win over Vic but when he left me career his career has gone downhill ? he?s not been on US TV once since. They will probably feed him to [WBO bantamweight champion] Fernando Montiel; I?m looking to build Vic.?
Shaw is sick and tired of big fights failing to come together for his fighters. Another of his men, firmly entrenched in the ?too good for their own good? category is undefeated WBC interim light-heavyweight champion Chad Dawson. After hopes were dashed of ?Bad? Chad meeting veteran Bernard Hopkins, Dawson will now meet full WBC king Jean Pascal on August 14 at Montreal?s Bell Centre.
?Chad needs to fight that fight,? said Shaw, ?but after Pascal, the next one would be [IBF super-middleweight champion, Lucian] Bute ? he?s the only one who?s not locked up in the Super Six, the only free agent. So after Pascal a fight in Canada with Bute would be a big, big fight. It would have to be at a catchweight of around 173; Chad could make it.
?But there are a lot of big fights when the Super Six is over. Chad?s always on weight but he could go to cruiser, maybe go to Australia to fight Danny Green.?
Shaw believes any potential Hopkins fight is, however, dead in the water.
?Hopkins told us he would never fight Dawson,? Shaw added. ?He said he?d fight the winner of Dawson-[Glen] Johnson, then of Dawson-[Antonio] Tarver, then he fights an old Roy Jones, who?d just lost to Danny Green in less than two minutes. Hopkins knows styles make fights and Chad would knock him out.?
