MANILA — Just asking, but when did journalists — particularly sportswriters — become the adultery police force? And when did they become the gatekeepers of moral purity?
Maybe I am missing something here, but the self-appointed morality cops have been all over 23-year-old wealthy bachelor and Olympic silver medalist Amir Khan in the runup to his Madison Square Garden small room (Wamu Theater) bout against Motormouth Paulie Malignaggi Saturday night.
Leave it to great self-promoter Yo Paulie to lampoon Khan Do In The Boudoir.
Malignaggi labeled him “a Peeping Tom” and a sexual pervert, the latter being amusing since Khan is as normal as normal gets in this area.
What did the supposedly pious Muslim lad, a world champion who does not hate the bright lights and flashy women in and around Hollywood, do to offend some sanctimonious windbags such as The Independent’s Alan Hubbard?
Model Leanne Crow, certainly not camera shy, exposed racy text mails, photos sent to her by boxing champ Amir Khan in return for payment by a British tabloid.
Get this, this redblooded boy from Bolton, now under the promotional aegis of Oscar “But You Can Call Me Randy” de la Hoya, sent racy text messages and photos of his excited manhood to a big-breasted “model” who then sold her X-rated tale to a UK tabloid.
Her name is Leanne Crow, and I don’t mean to be judgmental but I don’t see her relocating to a nunnery anytime soon based on her public photo gallery…if you know what I mean. It took me almost an hour to locate a photograph of this fine lady where her nipples were not fully exposed, for example.
Chesty model Leanne Crow is no shy wallflower in this so-called texting “sex scandal” with boxing champ Amir Khan (Nuts.com photo)
Khan also bragged about his sexual prowess in an interview with the British version of GQ, remarking that loose ladies in SoCal have been “lining up” for his erotic favors and then coming back for more, thus proving his bedroom technique is at least as refined as his ring skills.
Isn’t that typical locker room bragadoccio for a bachelor with serious coin in the bank and a high public profile?
What do you expect him to say, that he is sexually comparable to the Kentucky Derby, also known as the “fastest two minutes in sports”?
So what if Khan likes to tonk (fight) and bonk (no translation required)?
I guess Khan’s libido is as strong as his left jabs.
This has zero to do with his religion. I suspect there are horned-up young boxers who may be Baptists, Buddhists and even Roaming Catholics.
Veteran journo Hubbard penned some balderdash about being shocked and appalled, not to mention appalled and shocked, at the Khan sexual revelations.
Hubbard reacts as though he feels personally violated to lean that not all of Khan’s waking hours at spent the library, the Wild Card Gym and bowing in prayer to Mecca at a mosque.
I don’t know the man, but his position that Khan must remember that he is a role model for all the youth of his nation is ridiculous.
His stodgy reaction paints him as Old Mother Hubbard, really.
(I must admit laughing as the writer compared Khan to Muslim and ring icon Muhammad Ali in the “skirt chasing” category. Not hardly as I doubt Khan “scores” on train rides and in prefight dressing rooms the way my idol did back in the day.)
The only result of the racy photos and text messages about how he wanted to bend the publicity-and-money-seeking “model” into a pretzel are embarrassing at worst.
Khan may be studying the Kama Sutra more devotedly than he reads the Oscar-owned Ring magazine. But, again, so what?
I am in total agreement with Barry McGuigan’s published take in The Mirror, which is that Khan is merely an enthusiastic heterosexual (not that there is anything wrong with that, mind you) doing what young men and women do when they find about the birds and the bees. (“Float like a butterly, sting like a horny bee?”)
So, bottom line: Khan is accused of rampant randiness. He likes to shag hotties and he claims they fight for his physical delights.
To hear him tell it, he’s a champion when the lights are dimmed as well in the ring. Maybe he plays Barry White songs to get his conquests in the amatory mood, I don’t know. I see him as more of an R Kelly man in that category. More modern.
In New York State, there are three types of statutory crimes.
Felonies are way serious and misdemeanors are less so. The third category, offenses such as putting your feet up on a subway seat or jumping a turnstile for free admission to the underground, are mere violations.
Khan never took any vows of chastity, did he? He does not apsire to being a Tibetan monk.
In my book, all this amounts to is a violation — Amir violation, not any punishable crime.
Maybe Khan’s favorite musician is Kinky Friedman.
Maybe he likes to tie willing women to a bedpost and tickle them with feather boas. Maybe he thrills companions with triple reverse Hollywood contortions. Maybe he owns more handcuffs than the LAPD.
As for me, put me down firmly in the I-don’t-know-and-I-don’t-care column.
You moral preachers need to lighten up.
Returning to the boring subject of boxing, I see Khan winning a fairly wide UD 12 over Popgun Paulie in an entertaining scrap while I see old fogey Nate Campbell rebounding to school Victor Ortiz. Soupy takes a split decision over the Golden Boy Golden Boy.
I wonder if Ms. Crow, whose favorite charity must be the Community Chest, will be working as a round card girl…
I doubt it.
Poor Khan, objectified, a mere sex object at age 23.
It must be tough, kid, but I wouldn’t know.
