I know, I know, it’s pretty early in the game to suggest such a thing, but it’s not entirely crazy to wonder about the possibility that one day Manny Pacquiao will be the President of The Philippines. Pacquiao, who’s recently coming off of a stunning Congressional victory, will now have his chance to serve his constituents. If Pacquiao can get new schools built, bring more hospitals, and just overall improve the quality of life for his constituents, a run for the Presidency is not out of the question.
Recently I spoke with the current WBC Jr flyweight world champion Rodel Mayol. Rodel is managed by Manny Pacquiao, and shared his thoughts about Pacquiao’s recent Congressional victory, and about the possibility of a Presidential run in the future, ” I want to congratulate my manager and now Congressman Manny Pacquiao. I am very happy for him, he deserves it. Just like in boxing he worked very hard to win, I congratulate him.”
Mayol on Pacquiao and corruption in politics – ” I don’t think Manny will have to deal with corruption. Manny has money, he’s a very kind person. In Manny’s heart he will not be involved in corruption, he can say no. There is a need for hospitals, and there is a need for more schools, I think Manny wants to help the people there.”
Mayol on a future Pacquiao presidency – ” Maybe it’s possible if he wants to do that. We don’t know yet if that will happen, but maybe in years to come.”
There is no doubt that Pacquiao will come across corruption in the political field in the Philippines. It’s how he handles it that will make or break him. As of right now he has the love and admiration of his people. If Pacquiao is a successful Congressman, and he improves the quality of life for those he serves, he may be unstoppable if he decides to run for President. His popularity around the world speaks for itself.
Pacquiao’s fans here in Mississippi have mixed feelings. Some of the Filipinos that I have spoken with in Jackson, MS are happy that Manny is in politics, and some are not. Some of his fans fear that the politcal corruption that goes on in the Philippines will tarnish Manny, and change him. Some of his fans are happy that Manny is in politics. Mississippians who follow Pacquiao all hope that whatever he does in politics, it won’t impact a possible showdown against Floyd Mayweather.
Pacquiao promoter, Bob Arum is telling folks that Manny will fight in November. Mike Marley, one of boxing’s top writers has been reporting that negotiations are underway for the Mayweather showdown and to expect an announcement soon.
