Bob Arum has said in several interviews today that he intends to do everything in his power to put together a fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.
Now that the elections are over in the Philippines, both Arum and the fighting congressman himself are eager to put together Pacquiao’s next fight, which is scheduled for November 14th.
After arum announced that negotiations would begin again next week though, Leonard Ellerbe, advisor to Floyd Mayweather denied this.
Speaking to the Grand Rapids press, Ellerbe said:
?Ain?t nobody thinking about Manny Pacquiao, Bob Arum or Freddie Roach,? Ellerbe said. ?Floyd isn?t thinking about none of them, and there ain?t no negotiations starting, period. Floyd is just coming off a great win. He?s not thinking about any of them.?
?Who are they negotiating with, themselves? Manny Pacquiao is probably wondering how did Floyd Mayweather make $40 million, and I?m making whatever it was he made for his fight. Floyd Mayweather has definitely made more money in his last two fights than that guy has made in his whole career.?
Although the pay per view sales weren’t as good as predicted, Mayweather still made a huge pay day against Mosley. Talk before the first set of negotiations with Pacquiao put the figure they could each expect to make at around $40 million also.
If Mayweather can make the same kind of money fighting other opposition while preserving the intrigue over a possible Pacquiao fight though, will he still be that interested in fighting the newly appointed congressman anyway?
Lets not forget, before Shane Mosley became available Mayweather wasn’t exactly combing the pound for pound listings looking for his next opponent. Names like Matthew Hatton and Saul Alvarez were being thrown around. In fighting Mosley he went from a fighter looking for an easy pay day to a fighter many now have as the top pound for pound in the world.
Expecting that he will either want another top fighter or that he intends to fight as soon as November is far from a sure bet.
Jermain Brown, Philly: “Floyd is a fighter who fights for himself and doesn’t feel like he owes anything to anyone, not even his own fans. If he can find an easier fight for similar money, he will take it”
Joe Taylor, Pittsburgh: “Mayweather will end up taking an easy pay day in about a year and Pacquiao wil fight Margarito or Cotto as his next fight, you read it here first”
