The last time Manny Pacquiao was defeated at anything was in 2005 at the hands of Mexican legend Erik Morales. According to reports from boxing scribe Michael Marley, Pacquiao is in a very close race in his bid to become a congressman. If Pacquiao actually wins this congressional seat, would this be a good thing or a bad thing? I won’t for one second pretend that I know a lot about politics in the Philippines, but if it’s anything remotely close to what politics in America are like, I have big concerns.

Manny has worked hard to get where he is at. The Pacquiao fans around the world absolutely adore this guy, he’s a role model to many. I don’t know any politicians in America that are role models, and I would love for someone to tell me of any role models in the Philippines who are current politicians. American politicians for the most part all have self agendas. A lot of them are paid off by big corporations, big money people so that they will vote a certain way in order to suit their needs instead of the people’s needs. Politics in America has become so polarizing that it’s sickening.
Try to watch CNN, MSNBC, or FOX news in America. You don’t get the news, you get the viewpoints of that network. CNN and MSNBC both lean Democrat, and FOX news leans Republican. You can never get straight news anymore, you get bias viewpoints. Will Manny Pacquiao if he wins succumb to the pressures of lobbyists and big money pressures? Or will he actually be a Congressman of the people and for the people?
Mississippi is primarily a Republican state. More people in Mississippi vote republican than they do Democrat. Mississippi is primarily a pro life, pro guns, pro church state. The Governor of Mississippi is a Republican with former ties to the late President Ronald Reagan. Governor Haley Barbour comes from the Reagan administration, old Washington DC politics, so he knows people of power. It’s easier for him to get federal help if and when he needs it because of his ties with Reagan. It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.
Will Manny Pacquiao be a politician of the people and for the people? I would like to say ‘yes’ but only time will tell. If he runs his political life anything like he’s run his boxing life, the people that he will represent should be just fine.
