Tungod, Inabanga, Bohol ? In light of ?Pretty Boy? Floyd Mayweather, Jr.?s (41-0-0, 25 KOs) relatively easy conquest of ?Sugar? Shane Mosley (46-6-0, 39 KOs) about a week ago, talks about a potential record-breaking Pacquiao-Mayweather showdown have resurrected. The boxing public?s clamor for the ultimate fight between two of the sport?s top dogs has once again reached its peak. But before we dig deeper into every tiny detail of this dream matchup, let?s first try to consider one major evaluative flaw that some boxing pundits have used in the comparison between Mayweather and boxing?s current alpha male and seven-division champ Manny ?Pacman? Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs). Perhaps, one might consider him as a common denominator between the two ? Juan Manuel Marquez (50-5-1, 37 KOs). All the other issues? let?s leave them to rest for the moment. We still have the luxury of time, while waiting for both parties to iron out a deal. For now, we focus our attention at this particular comparative defect when we talk about Pacquiao and Mayweather.

Before anything else, let?s go over the facts. Marquez fought Pacquiao twice ? once at featherweight (126lbs) and once at super featherweight (130lbs), earning a draw in the first and losing via split decision in the 2nd. Both fights were close controversial ones. On the other hand, the gritty Mexican moved up in weight to challenge then come-backing Mayweather in what was supposed to be a catchweight battle at 144 lbs. Marquez weighed in at 142 lbs, but Mayweather weighed two pounds heavier than what was initially agreed upon. As expected, Marquez lost the fight quite convincingly.

Now that the facts have been laid down, we go directly to the topic at hand. Is Marquez a common denominator in the Pacquiao-versus-Mayweather discussion? You?d probably say yes because, quite apparently, Marquez fought both fighters. However, if you try to examine a little bit closer, taking note of some important details, you?d most probably think otherwise. Here are some of the reasons why? In both Pacquiao bouts, Marquez employed a strictly defensive counterpunching strategy. Everybody knows that that?s his forte. Against Mayweather, he was the one initiating the fight, thereby deviating from his comfort zone and leaving himself vulnerable to Mayweather?s precise ?defensive attacks,? or however you might call it. It may be interesting to note that Marquez also lost to another defensive boxer in Chris John. That being said, Marquez is obviously at his best when his opponent is going straight at him, but at his worst when facing fellow defensive fighters. Compounding Marquez?s woes when he fought Mayweather was the major size difference. Only four pounds might have separated each fighter during the official weigh-in, but come fight night, as both pugs entered the ring, Mayweather literally looked like a giant compared to Marquez. Probably afraid that the major size difference (which could easily be a 20-lb discrepancy) might dampen or dilute the upshots of his impending victory, Mayweather refused to take the pre-fight weigh-in at fight night.

The Pacquiao who fought Marquez is a far cry to the Pacquiao of today. When Pacquiao fought Marquez, he was struggling to make weight? but as he moved up north, putting more emphasis on making himself stronger rather than just making the weight limit, the Pinoy pride has since been nothing short of spectacular! Furthermore, Pacquiao?s distinction as the sport?s best fighter pound for pound has given him superb confidence in his ability and an unimpeachable aura of invincibility that strikes fear at the heart of his opponents? perhaps, Floyd Mayweather included.
