TOMORROW as we all troop to the polling places to cast our votes and hope that those PCOS machines ill-equipped with confabulated memory cards actually know how to count, we can only hope further that our newly-elected president will finally live up to the challenge of leading this country.
But if you ask me, none of the present crop of presidentiables can hold a candle to my preferred candidate.
It may not be avant-garde now, but mark my words?the day will come when my boxers will rule the political arena.
My braggadocio stems from a deeply held conviction that prize-fighters are better suited for politics than say…your actors, businessmen or lawyers.
Consider these:
They are fearless. There are no political wimps here. Calls for resignation? Impeachment proceedings? Opposition congressmen rocking the boat on a proposed legislation? Critics raving and ranting in the media about policy making?
Nah. My fighter-turned-politician won?t lose any sleep over it. Not that he understands any of it of course, but sometimes true courage emanates from a lack of perception.
They are good at following instructions. Observe how Manny Pacquiao bobs his head and listens intently every time the bespectacled Freddie Roach calmly mouths off instructions. Afterwards, he gets up and eviscerates his opponents.
Expect the same thing when he takes over the reins of government. For our country?s sake, let?s pray of course that the instructions are correct and that Chavit Singson isn?t the Secretary of National Defense.
They wake up early. No more late night mahjong cum jueteng profit-sharing sessions. No more visiting nightclubs, girlie bars and glitzy watering holes.
Say hello to power breakfasts, and mandatory daily exercise regimens for government employees. Hey, this is actually a good thing?
They stay away from drugs, alcohol and smoking. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is full of crap. The only drugs that Manny takes are those of the prescriptive kind and those that he endorses for some form of monetary benefit, of course. Indeed, my boxers stay away from drugs, alcohol and smoking. Only. (wink!)
They are in touch with the common man. Majority, if not all boxers come from humble beginnings. Unlike those presidentiables out there who claim to be poor, pretend to be poor, or feign concern for the poor, my boxers are actually poor.
But don?t worry. With the way they will soon be spending the country?s wealth, pretty soon so will all of us. Hurray!
MAKE MINE MACHIDA. Today is the big day for the much anticipated rematch between UFC light heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida and Mauricio Rua.
In their first matchup, Rua did better than expected and most pundits had him winning the fight–including noted MMA enthusiast and sportswriter Jonas Panerio.
Rua was able to thwart Machida?s feared striking by coming in close with a high guard and landing vicious leg kicks.
I thought the fight was close and could reasonably have been scored either way, but that?s the beauty of a contested verdict- a mandated rematch to settle the issue.
I?m picking the ?Dragon? to do a better job this time. I think all he has to do is to dictate the pace and be aggressive. In the first match, he allowed Rua to attack first and seemed content in picking him off and throwing counters.
Unfortunately, ?Shogun?s? high guard prevented Machida from inflicting any damage. The antidote to this is to attack first and disrupt the opponent?s defensive posture.
I?m picking Machida to win by unanimous decision this time.
LAST ROUNDS. Are on my inaanak Dylan Katara Naya who is celebrating her birthday this week and on all the Last Rounder moms out there. Happy Mother?s Day and Cheers!
