Our string of consecutive fight weekends continues this week with a double dose as UFC returns for UFC 113 (more on that later) while boxing counters with Paul Williams vs. Kermit Cintron.
Look for a Q&A with former Oklahoma State wrestling star Johny Hendricks on Friday as he gets ready for his third bout in the UFC in less than a year.
Also look for a story on Hendricks on NewsOK on Friday.
The main event is the highly anticipated rematch between Lyoto Machida and Shogun Rua for the light heavyweight title.
Machida won a narrow unanimous decision against Rua in a fight many observers thought Rua did enough to win. It was close, but I gave the nod to Machida.
As for Williams and Cintron, this is an opportunity for both men to try to make a mark and set themselves up for something bigger down the road.
Cintron has had a bit of a career revival lately, punctuated by his win over Alfredo Angulo last year while Williams has been a budding star for the last two, three years.
A Williams win might get a small amount of the public to start demanding a shot against Floyd Mayweather.
I don?t see that happening though it?s a very intriguing bout as Mayweather has fought brilliantly as the bigger, stronger man. He wouldn?t be that against The Punisher.
However, Mayweather?s dance card is full whether it?s Manny Pacquiao or Sergio Martinez.
Williams is a freak of nature at more than 6 feet tall and still keeping his body in the 147-160-pound range without looking like he is ready to keel over.
Williams is coming off the Fight of the Year (in my opinion) against Martinez in December where Williams earned the nod.
Unfortunately for this fight fan, I won?t see either event live because of my high school sports responsibilities, but I?ll try to catch replays Sunday.
