Fight fans were forced by the newest self-proclaimed Super-Hero, Floyd Mayweather to wait, and wait, and wait, before he finally entered the ring Saturday night.
This action turned very appropriate as fight fans were forced to wait, and wait, and wait for any sustained action after the 4th round of this alleged mega-fight between Mayweather and “Sugar” Shane Mosley.
The MGM Grand Hotel and Casino was the site for what PPV fight fans have become accustomed to…a lack of action and total dominance by one fighter, while the other seems content to survive.
Of the 12 rounds in this fight that was for…ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!, the first four were entertaining, until “father time” tapped Mosley on the back and for the rest of this night, he would be in “survival mode”.
Mosley, he who stated many times he would soundly defeat Mayweather, being defeated had to be a bitter pill to swallow, especially hearing post-fight comments from business partner (?) Oscar de la hoya of Golden Boy Promotions.
“Floyd Mayweather is the best in the world both in and out of the ring. He has the knowledge of how to get in your head outside of the ring, and the ability to use his talents in the ring to defeat you. Manny Pacqioa has no quit in him and this fight will be the greatest ever”, said the ever pressing for promotional advantage de la hoya.
A Pacquiao vs Mayweather bout, should that ever happen, is the next fight that will allegedly be the only one that can “save boxing”.
This story is now older than last years wedding cake and I must remind boxing fans that boxing is truly alive and well regardless of what Folyd Mayweather does.
No more questions regarding Mayweather being able to deal with a former world champion?
No more talk of Mayweather taking on Manny Pacquiao since Mayweathers’ demands for drug testing, purse distribution and other nonsense would get in the way?
The only real question that has no definite answer is “Where does Floyd Mayweather go from here”?
He says he may take a year or two off and discuss the situation with his family. That seems reasonable for someone who must wait for another payday since he remains unaffiliated with any boxing sanctioning body.
“Belts collect dust” has become the latest battle cry of the Mayweather entourage but that cry may well be one that directly reflects how Mayweather fits into the history of boxing.
Champions of the past, present, and the future will always be tied to the number of belts they have acquired during their professional career.
How then will Mayweather be remembered by future generations? Sure, right now he is the “king of the hill”, but that won’t last much longer.
There was a time when musical groups of different generations held top billing. That lasted until the next and latest sensation arrived…kind of like Floyd Mayweather.
Floyd Mayweather has given himself the nickname “Money” and he has obviously made lots of it.
For boxing fans of the past and the future (recognize I eliminated the present?), Mayweather will be remembered as a Hall-of-Fame boxer who made tons of money and held the title CHAMPION OF THE WORLD…how many times, and for how long?
The masses of Mayweather fans from around the country are willing to tolerate his disrespect for himself, his opponents, and recently famous boxers from past generations (Muhammad Ali and “Sugar” Ray Robinson) which can be directly tied to the seemingly unquenchable thirst for American fighters to dominate the sport of boxing.
The now disgusting racial tone of conversations regarding fighters who have made their name outside the United States has the potential to divide the entire world in a way as only politics has done in the past.
Oscar de la Hoya himself constantly makes reference to boxers in America being the best, yet he travels to Mexico (Sal “Canelo” Alvarez) and England (Amir “King” Khan) signing fighters who are then made appealing to the American boxing public.
There have been many pretenders to the throne of P.T. Barnum, exotic circus organizer and inventor of the phrase “There’s one born every minute”, in reference to “suckers” looking for entertainment.
There seems to now be a clear cut font runner for that throne and their names are Floyd Mayweather (Mayweather Promotions) and Oscar de la Hoya (Golden Boy Promotions).
The real fight began last night FOLLOWING the Mayweather/Mosley bout as de la Hoya and Mayweather began getting right after each other in what now seems to be a rather lucrative and thriving boxing business.
Not to worry, their combined minstrel/comedy act will be coming to a theater near you very soon.
