Moments ago Floyd Mayweather beat Shane Mosley via unanimous decision in a largely one sided fight.
Mosley landed a couple of big right hands in the second round, one of which wobbled Mayweather, but struggled to land much else throughout the fight.
As the rounds wore on, Mosley appeared to be looking for one big shot which never came, and Mayweather landed his own right hand over the top of Shane’s low left hand multiple times each round.
For Mayweather, his game plan was the same as ever, taking he first couple of rounds to adapt to his opponent and then dominating the rest of the fight. The judges scored the contest 119-109 twice and 118-110, all in favor of Mayweather.
The commentary team remarked several times that had Mayweather been a more aggressive fighter, he would have finished Mosley without too much trouble. Ever the cautious and patient technician though Mayweather was content to land big where he could and win rounds rather than pursuing the finish.
Although Mayweather was still not keen to put together combinations after landing one good shot, he was more offensive than we have seen him be for a while against Mosley. Perhaps more surprisingly he also looked stronger than Mosley, and wasn’t bullied around the ring as some suspected he would be. Mosley also looked his age for the first time and seemed fatigued as the fight progressed.
After the fight Mayweather was humble in his interview with Larry Merchant, calling Mosley a future hall of fame entrant and even resisting the chance to lay into his doubters and rivals. The question on everyone’s minds was also addressed by Merchant, who enquired about a possible Pacquiao fight and what the latest was on Mayweather’s drug testing stance was.
As he has repeated in several interviews, Mayweather seemingly remains adamant that all his future opponents will undergo the same kind of testing that he put himself and Shane Mosley through. He didn’t seem particularly interested in the idea of agreeing to the testing protocols of the State Athletic Commissions, even if they add blood testing to some degree in the future.
The fight leaves us with several unanswered questions with regards to the future of the welterweight division that should start to become apparent over the next few days. Will Mayweather now try to make the fight with Pacquiao happen? Was this Shane Mosley’s last fight? And finally how many pay per views did Mosley and Mayweather manage to sell?
