No matter what the outcome of tonight’s fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Shane Mosley is, Manny Pacquiao’s pound for pound king title remains secure. Floyd sooner or later will have to get into the ring with Manny and take what he thinks is his. That of course is IF he gets past Shane Mosley, which is no guarantee.
True enough, Floyd is undefeated in 40 fights but his resume is not nearly as impressive as Pacquiao’s. A victory over Shane Mosley does not give Floyd the pound for pound king title back. Mayweather will have to defeat Mosley, retract his blood testing demands, and get into the ring and fight Pacquiao. If and when this happens, he must defeat Pacquiao in order to reclaim king status. That’s the only way he can do it.
Floyd is a great fighter and he will have his chance to prove it tonight against Shane Mosley. If Floyd can defeat Mosley in spectacular fashion, such as by knockout, it would certainly help his cause. A Mayweather knockout over Mosley really sets things into motion. On the other hand, if Mosley defeats Mayweather, he injects himself into the Pacquiao sweepstakes. 8CountNews.com (based out of Mississippi/Boston) asked their team for predictions on tonight’s fight and they overwhelmingly picked Mayweather by UD. Mississippi based Stan Nichols, (President of USA Boxing Southern Association) predicts a Mayweather victory as well. Until someone steps up and takes what Manny Pacquiao has rightfully earned, he is still the pound for pound king no matter what the outcome of tonight’s fight is.
Meanwhile as all of this is going on, Manny is running for Congress in the Philippines. Many of his fans do not want Manny in politics. The Filipinos that I have spoken to wish that Manny would abandon his political run and stick to fighting. I spoke with Manny Pacquiao about this topic a few months ago, and he told me that it’s possible that he will fight even if he wins the Congressional seat. Perhaps so, but will he have time to focus on boxing if he is a congressman?
