Hello Boxingtalk, I just wanted to say I have enjoyed your site for the past few years since Andre Berto and his friend JP put me on to it. Its nice to finally get some real insight into what goes on behind the scenes and to get an honest opinion. Here’s my two cents and please let me know what you think. I’ve been an Andre Berto fan since I met him several years ago. He is a class act and I’ve seen all of his fights. I believe, in order to break into the upper echelon of his division, he needs a new trainer. His trainer does not have enough experience to help him reach the top and in his last few fights he hasn’t shown much improvement in defense. I’m not sure he’ll become a household name/major draw unless he hooks up with the likes of Steward, Roach or Richardson. Lastly, I’m not a Floyd fan, but I do support him financially. There are a million boxing fans like me who spend $50 bucks everytime he fights to hopefully see him get beat. As long as he keeps fighting, I’ll keep him gainfully employed. Take care, David Segui
Leon’s Response: Thanks for the email David. I think Berto is a great kid and I’ve been talking with him from the time he was an Olympian all the way until Al Haymon told him not to talk to me anymore, which just happened before his fight with Quintana. I have nothing against his trainer, and I’m not going to say Berto needs a new one, but he needs to tighten up his defense and strengthen his weaknesses. As a shorter welterweight, he needs to learn how to fight on the inside, otherwise he’s never going to be somebody with more skills than he has.
G, you are a funny Cat. You are still hustling the Mayweather name. I don?t blame you, it?s the only name that makes money for anybody these days, but you know Money will rather die than give you the publicity that a lawsuit will give you. You are a smart guy indeed for trying, but he is a lot smarter than you are.
Leon’s Response: Floyd a lot smarter than me? I don’t think so. And I don’t care how many stacks he saw his daddy hold when he was growing up, I am exponentially street smarter than he is. If somebody tells me they’re going to turn my $1M into $3M in a month and comes back with $5M in a few days, I’m going to tell him to keep the $2M I wasn’t expecting and keep flipping that till you turn it into $10M and I’ll see you then. Even if I never see dude again, I tripled my ticket. I certainly wouldn’t give him my bank account to run away with. That my friend, is stupid.
Ok… I’m really getting tired of all the bashing Greg is getting for writing about Floyd’s personal life. If floyd were to be a humble (I’m laughing to myself) champion, everyone would be praising Floyd. The facts are that he is constantly reminding everyone, including himself, that he is rich and has all of these material luxuries. Nobody should blame this site or any other who writes about his demeanor. In G’s last mailbag, someone commented that Ron Jaworski writing about Tony Romo’s personal life is equally as unnecessary as G’s piece on Floyd. News flash, bro, if Tony Romo had Floyd’s attitude, I would expect every media outlet to expose his life. Every action has a reaction, and if Floyd or his fans don’t like the press he’s getting, then I will quote the King of Pop (RIP), “Start with the Man in the Mirror” Keep it up G and all writers on Boxingtalk. Leon’s Response: Thanks for the email Chris. What’s nuts is people think I’ve been harsh. I’ve known this guy for YEARS and some act as though my dissection of his RECENT comments and actions is ugly. I’m being nice.
What?s good Greg? Have all these people writing in to the mailbag, the ones saying you?re a hater and you?re racist, really been reading b-talk for all these years? Cuz it seems to me that people are losing sight of the fact that you have been very gracious and lenient towards Mayweather Jr. over the years. In fact, I used to think that back in the days of the routine Mayweather chats and interviews that at times you were a lil? easy on him. The truth is you gave Floyd the forum to interact with the fans on a very real level. Don?t ya?ll read any other boxing websites, listen to the radio, read boxing magazines etc.? Many people (for years) have been/are straight up bashing the Mayweathers, people commenting on their abuse of women, drugs, money, the vegas shooting lawsuit, Roger?s lawsuit, etc. Some of it is just peoples? opinions but most of it is hating cuz it?s mostly people embellishing, acting jealous, or just trying to bring Mayweather Jr. down. However, what you do G imo is you deal with the facts and then you form your own opinion. Often times you use a quote from Mayweather, as you did in the article. Just like everyone else you are entitled to your own opinion, besides it?s your job. Ya?ll need to stop using hating as a crutch. Is that really all you guys got from the article? That G is a hater and a racist? I think that says more about the people reading the article than the author; people see what they want to see and hear what they want to hear. I think ya?ll need to take into account what G. Leon has said and done over the years on b-talk and then go back and read the article again. Leon’s Response: You’re absolutely right, but many who email Boxingtalk about Mayweather hold us to a higher standard based on the regularity Mayweather appeared here from 2004-2009. Am I a racist? I have one question for you Greg Leon, Do you think that 98% of your readers just started reading your website last November? Because if you do I’m here to tell you that I am in that 2% that started hitting your site in the beginning and I’ve seen you go on missions tearing boxers from limb to limb on your site even worse than now then you move on to the next pug. So why do you go in on team mayweather because if my memory serves me correct you use to earn with the guy (weekly members only interviews) and there was a time when 1 out of 3 entries on BT was dedicated to the “pound for pound Picasso” but if my memory also serves me correct Al Haymon (the man without a face) shut you down like a strip club on 42nd street and now it’s “funny money” this and “coonery” that. Greg Leon, your motives for your hate are as transparent as packing tape, especially to the people that watched you grow and the sad part about it is if PBF gave you $40k and an interview you’ll flip like flapjacks.
Leon’s Response: Right now, is there another boxer with a fight coming up that his been acting a fool so frequently? I’ve never been in the same strip club with Al Haymon and I’ve never heard about a single instance where Haymon did visit one, so I think you need to check your sources. Mayweather gave me $40k? Please brother that was just my daily stipend. Mayweather never gave Boxingtalk anything other than access. Not even a Mayweather Promotions ad, which should know since you’ve been reading for so long.
what up g-money, long time reader of the site. why didnt mosley go with arum and get 50-50 to fight pac man? does he think he has a better chance to beat floyd? regarding the green-ward fight, how concerned are you about fighting in wards hometown with the hometown ref? i cant stand ward and hope green knock him the fuck out. keep up the great work on the site
Leon’s Response: I’ll be sure to ask Shane next time we talk. Ward-Green: Of course we would have preferred to fight at a neutral site, but the money is there so the fight is there. Allan can punch with both hands and I’m confident that the home ring advantage streak will come to an abrupt halt at 5 when AG pieces him up.
