In what appears to be an impossible mission, the veteran Sugar Shane Mosley will take on the undefeated Floyd ?Pretty Boy? Mayweather Jr. this Saturday in Las Vegas in a 12-round match for the WBA welterweight title.
Boxing Lines:
Floyd Mayweather Jr -450 Shane Mosley +275 O/U 11.5
The defensive master Mayweather owns an impressive 41-0-0, which makes you question what could Mosley do to finally beat this guy?
As in most of Mayweather?s fights, I expect the other boxer to take the initiative, which in this case is Mosley.
The 38-year-old fighter that owns a 46 (KO 39)-5-0 record needs to find a way to attach his body without leaving spaces open for a potential counterattack. This is a hard task if you consider that Floyd is the best in the world at this.
Also, I expect Mosley to attack him differently from the rest of the 40 fighters that have losses against him; however, I don?t know if that will be good enough. Sugar is faster and has more power than any recent opponents Mayweather has faced, but the problem is actually getting to hit him.
In the last three years Floyd beat Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hutton back in 2007, and last year he beat Juan Manuel Marquez in a unanimous decision after coming back from a two year retirement, which means he hasn?t had much action recently.
Mosley, on the other side, has been more active in the last few years, losing to Miguel Angel Cotto in 2007, but beating Ricardo Mayorga in 2008 and Antonio Margarito in 2009.
Against Margarito, Mosley showed a different approach, and I give credit to his new trainer Naazim Richardson; that?s why I expect him to try to surprise Mayweather early in the contest.
Mayweather is a defensive master, so expect him to try to control the tempo of the match without throwing many punches but landing just enough to send the judges the message that he is always looking for quality and not quantity.
I have to be honest that I would like to see Mosley beat Mayweather, but in this era there is no fighter except for Manny Pacquiao that can do it, especially not a 38 year-old-guy with his best moments behind him.
