Former 3 time world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis sat down with this writer and spoke to me in depth about the upcoming May 1st showdown between the former pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather vs. Shane Mosley fight.
Lewis on Mayweather vs. Mosley
“Floyd moves around the ring well and nobody has been able to catch up to him yet. Shane Mosley is just as fast as he is. I think Mosley will be able to catch up to him and he will make this a good fight. It’s two good fast guys that will be competing. Mosley is a champion beater because of what he did to Margarito. He’s going up against the Mayweather. I call him “The Mayweather” because Floyd is all that and a bag of chips.”
Lewis on Mayweather fighting smaller guys
” It’s always been his criticism. Everytime you go to the barber shop for a hair cut the talk is of Floyd not wanting to fight guys that are his size. The average boxers out there understand that he needs to fight someone of worth. Shane is a little bit smaller than Floyd is in height, but not in stature and strength.”
Lewis on Pacquiao vs. Mayweather
” The world has been waiting for this fight. It was almost made but because of technicalities it didn’t happen. The green monster will fix that, I am talking about the money. The money will push all of the technicalities aside. The same thing happened with me and Mike Tyson. In Manny and Floyd you have two great fighters. But It’s in the future still, Mayweather has to get past Mosley. If Shane wins, he’s going to want Pacquiao. Any of these match ups will be a great fight.”
Lewis on the Edwin Valero tragedy
” I thought that this was sad. A lot of sad things are going on with boxers now a days. You never want to hear something like this happen to people. That was very sad for me to hear about.”
When I was in Memphis a few weeks ago covering the ESPN FNF card I ran into several Mississippians in attendance. I asked the fans who they thought would win the big Mayweather vs. Mosley fight. I asked Ben Lofton of Tupelo, MS who he thought would get the victory, “Man all I know is that I want Mayweather to get knocked out cold. I hate Floyd Mayweather, he’s an idiot.” Keith Rolando of Olive Branch, MS begs to differ, ” Mayweather is going to box the socks off of Mosley. Shane won’t be able to deal with Floyd’s movement and defense.”

May 1st will tell us a lot. If Floyd wins, he will get the chance to tell the world, “I told you so.” If Mosley wins he will get to say, ” I want Pacquiao!”
