Nonito Donaire Jr. is announcing a big step in his managerial career Thursday afternoon in San Carlos: His TKO Boxing Promotions company is taking on Dodie Boy Penalosa Jr.
That may in itself make the 70-mile round-trip drive worthwhile, but what I?m really after is news about what Nonito will be doing in the ring this spring and summer. Sources tell me we?ll be finding out whether he?s fighting Vic Darchinyan on Aug. 7 near Los Angeles, and finding out more about an interim fight presumably taking place May 15.
That said, I?m looking forward to seeing the Penalosa brothers (Dodie Boy and Jonathan surely will be on the scene today at the Undisputed Boxing Gym, and indications are that Gerry might be). Donaire?s manager Cameron Dunkin will be on hand, as will TKO president Chet Koerner.
Dodie Boy Jr. launched his pro career with a victory in January. Plans for his United States debut will be part of today?s announcement.
