Power, invincibility, and the feeling entitlement; a dangerous combination faced by many athletes. A combination too often caused by special preference given to high profiled athletes.
How often do we see athletes get away unscathed or with laughable punishment for their inappropriate actions?
Remember Gilbert Arenas? The Wizards player who despite bringing guns to work and having a previous felony conviction only received probation and minimal time at a halfway house.
The problem is that it only proves to the ?regular? people that there is a separate rule for them and high profiled individuals or those with money. With that power, many athletes often feels a false sense of invincibility; a feeling that they can do anything at any given time. As a result, most don?t give much credence to the possible consequence of their actions, which results most often in making stupid decisions.
The classic case of this is Edwin Valero, an athlete who was able to escape numerous convictions despite legitimate evidences. When he assaulted his mother, sister and wife and got caught with a firearm, he got away with only a few slaps on the wrists.
When that happens a person soon gets a feeling of entitlement that it is their right to do whatever they want and should be treated differently. Instead of being thankful for the special treatments that they received and changing their ways; most often than not, they keep making the same wrong decisions over and over again.
Now Valero has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife. In a Los Angeles Times article it was reported that Valero is currently being detained by the Venezuelan police after his wife was found dead in a hotel room. According to the police, Valero allegedly told a hotel security that he had killed his wife.
No one could have ever predicted that Valero would go this far. But was this really completely out of the realm of possibility considering his past inappropriate actions and violent behavior?
If Valero did truly kill his wife, then he needs to face the consequences. But there are other parties that should be ostracized for this unfortunate event. Those people who catered to Valero?s whims or only cared for the amount of money he can bring, instead of trying to help him change his behavior. The authorities who failed to take further actions against Valero for his past violent behaviors.
Valero had a chance to be one of the most popular fighters in the sport and might have been a potential opponent of Pacquiao, but he can now forget either of them happening. Even if he becomes popular, I doubt it’s for the reasons he initially wanted.
The chance for him to ever be given a U.S. is now slim and none. Even if he is able to once again escape this recent incident, he will be relegated to fighting in his home country or somewhere in total obscurity.
Another talented athlete filled with great potential, who threw it all away. But this time, an athlete that most fans will feel no sympathy and soon forget. 0 Response to ‘Edwin Valero: Arrested For Allegedly Murdering His Wife! The Dangerous Combination of Power, Invincibility and Entitlement!!’
