“If I see you doing round-by-round tonight I can tell you I’ll never credential you for any of my fights again. I see you are promoting that. Bad for business. Why should you get a credential if that’s what you’re doing?” – Ed “Tough Guy” Keenan
This was a threat sent to the website owner Ben Thompson of Fighthype.com prior to the broadcast of the Bernard Hopkins-Roy Jones Jr. rematch misery.
While I know that Keenan probably serves as no more than a puppet for the morons running Golden Boy Promotions, the stupidity of this threat has raised the eyebrows of many boxing fans and website owners within the boxing industry.
It is highly amusing to me that this idiot would make this threat while completely overlooking the fact that tens of thousands of boxing zombies were able to access live streams of this garbage event for free. Apparently Keenan’s threats didn’t exactly send shockwaves amongst the streaming sites as they had multiple versions of this broadcast through various websites.
Fighthype.com didn’t offer to show live video of the fight, they merely offered to give updates following each round of the Hopkins-Jones II bout. In fact, I think that Keenan probably did Fighthype a favor as the updates would probably look something like this:
They posed.
They clinched.
They failed to conquer.
Then they cried.
Repeat for 12 rounds then shoot yourself in the brain with the biggest bullet you can afford.
I can’t imagine writing updates on a fight projected to be dismal at best and probably outdid the expectations of most in a negative manner. Instead of worrying about people stealing the live video or providing round-by-round updates on a website, why don’t you morons worry about putting together the best, most exciting fights possible that the fans would be more than willing to buy?
Instead of bending over backwards to please Bernard Hopkins, Golden Mierda promotions might be better served focusing on buying the best talent that boxing has to offer and putting them in against formidable competition.
I mean… it’s a well-known fact that it’s GBP’s model to steal high-paid talent so why not pay for the most exciting guys that actually give two shits about giving the fans their monies worth? Whatever… idiots will be idiots.
I just wanted to let it be known that whoever orchestrated these threats are apparently so out of touch with the world today that they should slap themselves for calling themselves “promoters” or “publicists”.
Threatening the only regular form of media that covers the sport wouldn’t be all that smart in my not-so humble opinion. It’s merely a sure-fire way to create resentment and bias in the future.
The funniest thing about this all is that the website was threatened with no more credentials for future events when in fact, this might be the biggest expense for all boxing websites in existence today. Travel and hotel are virtually always out of pocket expenses when making the trek for a big fight. It is a money losing venture for virtually all websites and newspapers to send someone to “cover” these events. Ask Gordo Marley… back in 2007, Boxingconfidential.com probably spent over 10k in traveling and housing expenses related to “covering” the fights.
With Keenan’s threat to Fighthype, it has inspired The Boxing Truth Radio to start doing live audio broadcasts of these types of events that don’t deserve the PPV dollars from the loyal fans. It will be accessible to all and for free. Blame Ed Keenan for sparking this on-going trend as we’ll be encouraging all audio podcasts to do the same.
Threaten us all you want little guy… we won’t ever apply for a credential, I can guarantee it.
Here is good Ol’ Ed’s e-mail if you’d like to correspond with him regarding the subject: [email protected] PS. The link to watch the replay of Hopkins-Jones II is being well circulated for those that know where to look. I hear Keenan and Golden Boy’s next step is to send a cease and desist letter to Twitter.com for doing round-by-round updates.
