I couldn’t imagine why Roy Jones, Jr. or Bernard Hopkins went to the hospital last night rather than the post fight presser, unless they were suffering from boredom, feeling guilty for taking our $50, or just embarrassment.
Sure, those are a few cheap shots.
Let’s hope they didn’t have a “Rocky” moment while in their motorized wheel chairs near the nurses station in the wee hours, and decide to put us through the paces of a third fight between the two to be announced.
If you’re really, truly upset with the lack of action Saturday night from the Las Vegas Mandalay Bay, somewhere in your life you really do have bigger issues you need to address in your life rather than Jones-Hopkins II.
This was to pad the college fund of their respective children and nothing more.
More often than not, going back to the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea, Jones, Jr. and Hopkins have delivered for us when money, heart and effort were on the line.
Where do the two fighters go from here? I mean competitive fighting-wise.
Who else is there for either to fight?
Maybe Hopkins could lower himself to fight a 10 -rounder against a journeyman but true heavyweight or a young contender that could lead to a heavyweight payday. I would go for that. However I don’t think Hopkin’s attention span would go for anything other than instant gratification and David Haye.
To his credit, Hopkins did take the fight with Enrique Ornelas in Philadelphia on the night Jones, Jr. got knocked out in Australia by Danny Green to set up last night’s fight.
Maybe the aforementioned Australian Green should get a legitimate big win over a live body and then challenge Hopkins. I’d go for that.
That problem solved, what do we do with Roy?
Jones, Jr. can certainly rack up a few quick wins in Mississippi over the likes of the Jeff Lacy’s and Omar Sheika’s. After that, TV might buy him again.
In the mean time, an opponent, with a little creativity and luck, may fall through the cracks and need to fight Jones, Jr., a certain 175 lbs. gatekeeper.
I believe Jones, Jr. will want to finally call it a day only after a win in his hometown of Pensacola, FL where it all started for him.
After that, Jones may continue to talk about another fight, even a tune-up, but never actually retire or take another fight. I guess that would make sense also knowing Roy Jones, Jr.
