RP flyweight champion Federico Catubay of the SGG Stable sowed terror in Tokyo, Japan last Saturday.
In a country known for overmatching non-title matches and for hometown decisions, a Filipino sent to the hospital his Japanese opponent, who is now in a coma after their 10-round bout.
Catubay knocked out Japanese southpaw Masayuki Fujikake, the Orient and Pacific Boxing Federation No.10 super-flyweight, in the last round of the card promoted by the Kiyoshi Nagashima-owned 18 Koga Promotions.
It was supposed to be an easy match for Fujikake, who outweighed Catubay by almost two pounds during the official weigh-in.
Cancelled fight
But the Cebu-based underdog shocked the Japanese, who was decked for good at the 2:30 mark of the 10th round. The Japanese fighter was carried out of the ring by a stretcher and was immediately rushed to the hospital.
Nagashima also cancelled the main event between his son Kengo, a former OPBF super-featherweight champion, and RP featherweight champion Jeffrey O?ate.
Kengo fell down the stairs at his home the day before the weigh-in and felt pain in the neck, forcing the older Nagashima to cancel the event.
The victory was Catubay’s 16th, including 11 KO wins, against nine loses and three draws.
At press time, Fujikake (16-4, 3KOs) was undergoing brain surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain.
