8CN had the great privilege to speak with renowned trainer, Nonito Donaire Sr. about his star pupil, Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton. Ana (6-1-1, 1KO) will be facing Lisa “Bad News” Brown (16-4-3, 5KOs) on March 27th at the Casino Rama, in Ontario, Canada. Here’s what Mr. Donaire had to say:
8CN: Hi Nonito. It’s a pleasure to speak with you, sir. How’s training camp been?
ND: Ana’s doing fine, really good and [Monday] is our last workout day here in the Bay Area, then we’re going to fly this coming Tuesday to Canada.
8CN: I know that you’ve commented on what a hard worker Ana is. Tell us about that.
ND: Yes, that’s right. That’s why I keep on telling everybody that I hope that all fighters that I bring to train will have work ethics just like Ana. She’s a very, very hard working lady.
8CN: She’s going to be going for her 3rd world title against Lisa Brown on March 27th. If she succeeds, she will be the first Filipina boxer to capture 3 major, world titles, right?
ND: That’s right, that’s right. She will also be the first Filipina to be an undisputed champion, so we are just ready for this fight and hopefully we will get this one. I know that Ana will be able to bring this belt back to our place. I’m excited about that.
8CN: Sounds good. It sounds like you’re very confident that Ana is ready for this fight.
ND: She’s a hundred percent ready now. She’s really a hundred and ten percent ready, and for me she’s not like a woman the way that she throws her punches. She’s really strong this time. She’s a lot better than when she fought Kelsey Jeffries.
8CN: I saw that fight and she looked really good in that one, even though she was recovering from knee surgery at that time.
ND: That’s right and this time I know we’re going to fight a south paw and it will be difficult to fight, but I know she will be able to handle it.
8CN: What’s next for Ana if she wins this 3rd title? Will she keep defending at super bantamweight?
ND: I think she’s going to stay at the same weight because I think she’s going to be secure. If she keeps training for 122, I think she’s going to stay there for a while.
