LOS ANGELES — One of the happiest fellows outside the camp of Manny Pacquiao occupied a corner seat at ringside during Saturday night’s big boxing bash at the Staples Center.
First Gentleman Mike Arroyo was beaming with pride shortly after Manny Pacquiao roared to a sixth-round knockout win over Hector Velazquez in their super-charged bout.
Seated beside daughter Luli and top-notch election lawyer Romulo Makalintal in the premium $300 seats, Mr. Arroyo said Pacquiao’s victory is a testament to the fighter’s courage.
“Well, congratulations kay Manny. Karangalan ng Pilipinas kaya tayo nandito,” said Mr. Arroyo. “Parang mga 10 to 20 percent lang tayo dito kaya dapat i-cheer si Manny.”
“Alang-alang yan sa Pilipinas. Ang kinarga ni Manny ay iyung Philippine flag. Ang kinarga niya ay iyung bansang Pilipinas.”
Mr. Arroyo added that even though Velazquez was having his moments, Mr. Arroyo stressed the thought of seeing Pacquiao get in real trouble never entered his mind.
“Hindi ako kinabahan. Mukhang iyung kalaban ang kinabahan.” added Mr. Arroyo.
A victory party was later held at Cast Away in the neighboring city of Burbank.
Pacquiao is one of the most ardent supporters of President Arroyo.
