PALM SPRINGS, CA – Arthur Abraham’s fight against Andre Dirrell has a new home as of Thursday afternoon.
The March 6 date has been pushed to March 27 due to a Dirrell back injury but the Rancho Mirage casino venue hosting the sold out fight couldn’t adjust to the new date due to a Doobie Brothers concert and had to give up the date.
Enter Detroit, Michigan and either the Cobo Arena or Joe Louis Arena and an answer could be known by later today.
Detroit is the closest city to the Flint, MI home of Dirrell, 18-1 (13 KO’s), promoters could find on such short notice.
This is a stage two fight as part of the Super Six World Boxing Classic in the 168 lbs. super middleweight division being televised in its entirety by Showtime Network and has been favorably received by worldwide boxing media.
Abraham, 31-0 (25 KO’s), is an Armenian living in Berlin, Germany. He turned 30 on Saturday. He knocked out Jermain Taylor last October in stage one of the tournament.
Abraham made 10 consecutive defenses of the International Boxing Federation middleweight (160 lbs) title before vacating his lucrative standing to attempt to make a name for himself in America in a higher weight division.
Abraham and coach Ulli Wegner have been in Palm Springs just a mile away from the Agua Caliente Casino fight venue since February 8 to adjust to the heat and recover completely from jet lag.
Abraham and Wegner have to determine if they move the training camp immediately from the desert of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley Boxing Gym run by Lee Espinoza to the winter weather of Detroit with roughly a month to go before the fight or even head back to Berlin temporarily.
