Floyd Mayweather has been giving lots of interviews ahead of his bout with Shane Mosley lately, but can’t seem to stick to the subject for any length of time.
That subject of course is the one that got away, the super fight between himself and Manny Pacquiao. Floyd seems so consumed with it in fact that the interviewers don’t even have to ask about it anymore for Floyd to bring it up.
In the video below with Slam Online, Mayweather goes from which basketball teams he supported growing up to how much he thinks Manny Pacquiao made for his endorsement deal with Nike.
The first half of the video Floyd talks about his love of basketball and sports betting. But true to form he breaks into a tirade about Manny Pacquiao at around the 4.55 mark.
He then goes on to claim that Pacquiao will sign anything, stating that “Manny Pacquiao never saw a contract he didn’t like”. He also proclaims that he knows the amount of money that Pacquiao got from his Nike deal, which he claims was $75,000. Now for a major star like Pacquiao and one of the biggest brands out there like Nike, this sounds like a pretty low offer. Than again Mayweather doesn’t disclose why he thinks this was the case and doesn’t seem to have an answer as to why Nike are sponsoring Pacquiao and not him.
Spencer Bourne, Pittsburgh PA: “Every time Floyd opens his mouth he gets himself in trouble, why doesn’t he just hire someone to keep him from making these kinds of blunders all the time?”
I’ve wondered that myself, perhaps employing one of his cronies off camera who can prod Floyd with a long stick when he comes out with something either legally inflammatory, untrue or that might damage his own career. On a more serous note, many sports stars have used professional media training agencies to help them come across better in interviews, and Mayweather could certainly use one. Rambling and changing the subject at random without being provoked isn’t a sign of someone who barely gets hit in most of his fights.
Simon Allsop, Greensburg PA: “Why does the media always give Floyd such a hard time? He’s the best fighter in the world, undefeated and he’s trying to clean up the sport yet all he gets is ridicule.”
Well I can only speak for myself here, but generally Mayweather brings all the scorn he gets on himself by the things he says in interviews. If you watch the interview below, (which was to a Basketball and Hip Hop magazine, not boxing), he without provocation brings up how he deserves the best sponsors in the world and how he thinks fellow boxers will sign anything put in front of them. And he comes out with these things literally a few times per week.
Jordan Bremner, Philadelphia PA: “How does Mayweather know what Pacquiao is getting for his endorsement deals? It’s strange that Mayweather then says the best companies only deal with the best athletes, but fails to realize that he’s not getting the best deals and so isn’t thought of as the best fighter”
For any major athlete there are usually all kinds of endorsement deals floating around that they can take, most of which the public never hears about. Mayweather might have been offered $75 grand by Nike, which he turned down and assumes Pacquiao was offered the same money. As for the second statement, I think that speaks for itself.
