LOS ANGELES — Just who is Hector Velazquez?
While a lot of people are looking forward to the projected rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Erik Morales, there are some who seem to be overlooking Velazquez who goes up against the Filipino on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).
But Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s chief handler, isn’t one of them.
So, here’s a picture of Velazquez — in the eyes of the American trainer.
“This guy is a tough guy and he can go the distance with almost everybody. He’s a strong guy and he’s a physical fighter. He’s a veteran and I expect a battle, especially in the early rounds,” he said.
However, he believes that it’ll be Pacquiao left standing at the end of the 12-round, non-title fight.
“I think Manny will stop him toward the end of the fight. I think we’ll get him out of there. Velazquez is a strong guy. He’s a good body puncher and he won his last fight with a body punch.
“But if the fight goes 12 rounds and as long as Manny comes out of it fresh, then I don’t mind going the distance,” he added.
The American trainer who once handled heavyweight king Mike Tyson said he’s watched tapes of Velazquez’ last five fights, giving him a better view of their opponent.
Velazquez, 30, won his last fight over Trinidad Mendoza last July 15 in Chicago, ending the fight with a vicious right to the body of Mendoza in the sixth round.
During the early rounds, Velazquez appeared to be slow on his feet, opting for a toe-to-toe battle with his fellow Mexican. Obviously, he has to change his stand against Pacquiao.
“He’s hittable but tough. That’s why I picked this guy because he’s durable. He’s a tough guy,” said Roach.
“But the thing is we’ll get some rounds. We need them. If we go out there and blow him away in one round, we might need another tune-up match before the big fight (against Morales),” added Roach.
But it doesn’t mean, however, that Pacquiao won’t go for an early kill. As they say, it’s always better safe than sorry.
