Los Angeles – The Wild Card Gym located is in the midst of Hollywood and it’s prized product Manny Pacquiao is the best pound for pound boxer in the world today. The combination would naturally attract movie star types and it has in recent days.
Move over Dodgers left fielder Manny Ramirez, there is a new Manny taking claim to the Mannywood moniker.
And for the record, Ramirez used performance enhancing drugs, Pacquiao has only been accused.
Recently Pacman has been visited by Jean-Claude Van Damme, Steven Segal, and actual current tinsel town royalty “Marky” Mark Whalberg – along with his young Pacmaniac son.
Long gone are the days when La-La Land fight fans could crash The Wild Card Gym to catch Pacquiao in the midgst of a grueling workout. As Manny s star has risen, the security around the gym has increased, discouraging fans from visiting or hanging out in the parking lot, hunting for an autograph.
Rightfully so, as a boxer should have his privacy while preparing for a fight, but this writer will never forget walking into the Wild Card Gym before Manny’s first fight with Juan Manuel Marquez back in 2004 – the pre-super star days – and taking in the scene with fans from far and near, all there to root Pacquiao on in his preparations.
I guess now you have to be at least a C-level movie star, one of the three dozen Pacquiao hanger-ons, or pay $20 to spend some quality time with the power punching Pinoy; Pacquiao held a meet and greet on Valentine’s Day for those who wanted to pay.
Oh, did I mention Pacquiao fights Joshua Clottey on March 13, from Dallas, Texas, with the action on Top Rank PPV?
