Throughout the history of boxing, the heavyweight division has largely been the face of the sport.
Since the end of the Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis era though, the division has been a rather barren landscape, and is now ruled over by the Ukrainian Klitschko brothers.
While the pair are no doubt both great fighters, they lack the personality or style to appeal to most fans outside of mainland Europe, and don’t have big followings in the United States.
The lack of mainstream interest in the Heavyweight division has slowly but surely increased the interest in the lighter divisions, and the welterweight division is now the biggest in the sport.
Part of that has been a deep talent pool, headed by stars such as Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Floyd Mayweather.
While the best heavyweight in the world is lucky to make $10 million per fight, Pacquiao and Mayweather looked set to make $20 million each from their now canceled clash, and regularly break into the top earning sports stars lists each year.
