Speaking to the gathered media at the superbowl, Floyd Mayweather as usual came out with several quotes worthy of attention. The majority of which seemed to be aimed toward Manny Pacquiao rather than his upcoming opponent Shane Mosley.
At several points during the many interviews he had this weekend, he said his main focus was Shane Mosley, only to then talk at length about Pacquiao, the extra testing issues, and what his plans for the future are.
As usual the fans were vocal about some of the more suspect things Mayweather came out with:
Sean Harris, Pittsburgh PA: “Why does fraudweather keep trying to make is sound like he was the one being asked for the extra testing in his interviews? As far as I can remember he’s the one demanding it”
(Mayweather: “Shane Mosley don’t mind undergoing extra tests and I don’t mind either, we’re trying to clean up the sport of boxing”)
I noticed this as well Sean, it almost sounds like the whole thing backfired so badly that hes trying to distance himself from the whole thing. Rather than owning it and saying ‘I demanded the extra testing to clean up the sport’, he’s now saying ‘I don’t mind the extra testing either’. Perhaps this is a preperation for backing out of the extra testing in the future, given he might not be able to find that many decent opponents who want to have random blood tests.
Shane Mosley needed this fight because he hasn’t fought in a year and his other opponent just pulled out, but more active fighters who otherwise don’t have trouble getting high profile fights (Eg. Pacquiao) wont be as likely to play ball.
Perhaps most astonishingly of all, Floyd claimed to like taking chances, which coming from one of the most careful boxer in the history of the sport is a little off base.
Freddie Brown, Irwin PA: “Not only does Mayweather only fight in Las Vegas, hand pick most of his opponents, take zero risks in his fights, and now he even requires extra testing from his opponents. A risk taker he is not”
Astute findings Mr. Brown, and yes, it is a little odd for Mayweather to be coming out with this kind of thing. Most of the time he prides himself on outthinking his opponents and not being hit, so to say he takes risks is completely against his nature.
Patrick Forbes, Scranton PA: “Everyone on here’s always doggin on Floyd Mayweather, why don’t anyone ever pick on Pacquiao or Mosley?”
Herb Bochnovic, Erie PA: “Shane Mosley cant even buy a break, the guy’s looking for any fight he can get, he finally lands a big one and even his opponent doesn’t want to talk about him, the guy’s invisible”
Well I can’t argue that Floyd gets a lot of flack around here, but at the same time Floyd and his uncle are constanty coming out with outlandish or ridiculous statements (A-side Meth?). Boxers like Pacquiao and Mosley aren’t as prone to coming out with nonsensical jabberings like Roger Mayweather and don’t have the ego of Mayweather (support me like an american soldier?).
