The ink on his brand new promotional contract with Golden Boy has not even dried, and young Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (30-0-1, 22 KO) is set to be on the grand stage in his first fight with Golden Boy. He is set to take on the ever-dangerous TBA, as no opponent has been selected at this time.
This news comes to us absent the finalization of the headline fight. Golden Boy Vice President Eric Gomez told reporters in Mexico that the deal between Mayweather and Mosley is “98 % done”, and that television details are all that is missing from the contract.
Alvarez is a fast-rising star in the Mexican fight market, a market in which Golden Boy is anxious to delve further into. The mere fact that Alvarez was rumored to be a potential opponent for Mayweather has helped publicize his name here in the states.
“We will start the first of three fights that we have for him this year. They will be against some of the top ten welterweights. He wants competitive fights and he’ll have them,” Gomez commented on the plan for Alvarez.
I’m not a betting man, but would be willing to bet that the rumors of Mayweather-Alvarez will materialize at sometime in the near future.
