Oscar De La Hoya spoke out today on numerous boxing topics. He spoke about the Pacquiao fight, the Mosley fight, Mayweather Jr’s fight plans, cheating, Margarito and more. But, it’s the comments on cheating that really caught my attention. Let’s examine these comments further.
According to the Associated Press, Oscar De La Hoya said the following: “Whatever type of cheating you’re doing, it’s wrong. You should be banned for life.”
Hey Oscar, the big question I have for you is does this include Floyd Mayweather Jr? Does your statement “whatever type of cheating” include ducking, avoiding, consumer fraud, and running away from tougher opponents? Doesn’t the cowardly actions of Floyd Mayweather Jr count as “cheating”? What about Mayweather’s usage of Xylocaine to numb his “sensitive hands”?
I can tell you this, the amount of feedback I get on Mayweather’s gutless actions and boxing career is overwhelming. Here are a few samples of what boxing fans are saying: David Butler from Carmichael, CA – “How can anyone root for Mayweather when he refuses to fight the tough opponents? He has cheated his way to the top.” Brian Larson from Anatola, CA – “Floyd has cheated his way to a 40-0 record.”
If De La Hoya really wants cheaters “banned for life” then he should start with Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mosley is an admitted steroids user. Mayweather refuses to fight the tough opponents that could potentially defeat him and he uses a substance that’s banned in 49 states. Both of these are examples of cheating. Oscar, shouldn’t these two guys be banned?
Danny Tatum of Fair Oaks, CA asked me “Isn’t this the same promotion that has Mosley and Mayweather?” Yes Danny it is the very same promotion. However, Oscar rather blame everyone else while his own stable of fighters cheat. But, we shouldn’t be surprised by Oscar De La Hoya’s comments or actions. Oscar has gone from a “Golden Boy” to a “Hypocritical Man”.
