HE WAS THE LAST TO BEAT PACQUIAO, BUT A COMEBACK IS TOO LATE FOR MORALES

Mexican legend Erik Morales (48-6, 34 KO) has announced he will return to the ring in Monterrey, Mexico against Jose Alfaro (23-5, 20 KO). The date of the fight has been set for March 27.

In addition to being a hero to his home country, Morales has the right to claim he was the last man to defeat Manny Pacquiao. The victory over Pacquiao was coincidentally the last victory logged by Morales, which is now five years deep in the rear view mirror. Since the victory over Pacquiao, Morales has lost four straight and spent the last two-and-a-half years in retirement.

Morales last fought in August 2007, losing a close decision to (then) WBC lightweight champion David Diaz. Most felt that Morales’ best days were behind him. He was fighting arguably two weight classes above his optimal weight, and looked to have left most of himself in the ring after a career filled with toe-to-toe wars. Morales is now 33 years of age, which is ancient in brawler years. Add in two-plus years of ring rust and you have a recipe for an embarrassing night for one of this generation’s legends.

There is hope for Morales, as the most recognizable name on Alfaro’s resume is a badly faded DeMarcus Corley. Alfaro’s last fight ended in a tenth round TKO loss to Antonio DeMarco. Alfaro has now found himself faced with an opportunity to scratch a future hall of famer’s name on his resume, regardless of how far gone Morales may be. Morales seems confident that he still has enough gas left in his tank to make a meaningful run in the lightweight division.

I understand Morales’ desire to make a comeback. He is only 33 years old and fighting is in his blood. Asking a guy like him not to want to box is like asking a fish not to swim. Regardless, I’m opposed to his comeback. Share your thoughts on Morales’ return in the comments.
