While the Super Six boxing tournament has gone through only one round of bouts, drama and action was not in deficit. We have witnessed the underdog in Andre Ward dominate his world class opponent Mikkel Kessler. A powerhouse Arthur Abraham was able to score a brutal 12th round K.O. over the talented and athletic Jermain Taylor, voluntarily forcing Jermain to eject from the event due to fear of further injury and the possibility of permanent damage. The tournament is shaping up to be a very exciting one, defining the winner to be the ultimate super middleweight champion of the world. Or does it? What is in store for the winner?
This question can have many different answers, all depending on who wins. One thing that is likely to happen, is as cascade of re-matches against former opponents of the tournament. They are all good fighters, evenly matched up (more or less), and are likely to provide the fans with entertaining and competitive fights. By the time the tournament is complete, all of them will have made a name for themselves win or lose, and would always spark interest in the eye of the public and their curiosity of a re-match outcome.
What else is likely to happen? Well, I strongly believe that the former Super Middleweight champion of the world Joe Calzaghe, will magically appear on the radar. Over the past two years, we have all read that Joe is content, and is enjoying his retirement. He is not a young man anymore in terms of boxing, and a comeback would likely be brief. Nonetheless, his legacy is not as solid as he believes it is. Over the past few weeks, while in search of polls on this very topic, I have learned that many boxing fans don’t think he deserves to be called “best,” and believe that he still has more to prove. To conclude, I think that there is a reason that Joe is attending matches, and the reason being is his gut feeling pushing him back into the ring and out in the crowd.
What’s better? Either way works for me. Let’s not forget that there are plenty of boxers out there, who deserve a shot at the title. The tournament is a superb idea, and it will give us the top fighter(s) to watch. They are mostly young, and will hopefully want to defend their title as often as possible. As for now, let’s see how the rest it goes. The next scheduled fight is Andre Dirrell vs. Arthur Abraham on March 6th in Rancho Mirage, California.
