MANNY PACQUIAO’S new promoter Gary Shaw has vowed “to make life simple” for the Filipino prizefighter in all of his future matches, a report on the Internet said on Thursday.
“He’s no longer going to have to worry about tickets and rooms and gloves and who picks the gloves or any of that. Everything will be laid out and it’ll be so simple for him they’ll think they’re not even fighting,” Shaw said.
Pacquiao signed up with Shaw, who used to be the chief operating officer of Main Events, on Monday, making him the latest addition in the promoter’s impressive stable that also includes world super welterweight champion Winky Wright, Jeff Lacy and Diego Corrales.
Pacquiao, together with the three power-hitting boxers under the New Jersey-based promoter, were dubbed as the “Fearless Foursome” in the report—and Shaw was only too willing to agree.
“Yeah, for sure,” said Shaw, who visited trainer Freddie Roach’s Wild Card gym on Tuesday afternoon to look at his latest charge.
“As a matter of fact, on the plane over here today I was looking at the pound-for-pound list and it had Corrales, it had Pacquiao, it had Wright; I believe that Lacy should be on it,” he said.
“So in my mind I have four of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the top 10 in the world, recognized three for sure, I believe I have four.”
In signing a promotional contract with Shaw, Pacquiao is hopeful that he won’t turn out to be like his former promoter, Murad Muhammad, whom the boxer sued for allegedly cheating on his ring earnings.
Muhammad, who began promoting all of Manny’s fights since 2000, was forced to settle out court for an undisclosed sum—although it was reported to be $700,000 (P39.2 million)—and terminate his contract with the Filipino boxer.
Although Pacquiao is a certified box-office draw, Shaw said he can still enhance Manny’s market value.
“I can do the same thing I did for Shane Mosley when Shane beat Oscar [de la Hoya] the second time,” Shaw said.
