SHAW HITS JACKPOT, PACQUIAO GETS BACKING
Three weeks prior to former three-time world champion Manny Pacquiao attempting to get back into the win column against Hector Velazquez, promoter Gary Shaw has announced that Pacquiao will now be performing exclusively for Gary Shaw Productions. Shaw said, “I have signed a ‘platinum chip’ world class champion whose persona transcends sports and approaches folk lore in the Philippines.” Shaw adds Pacquiao to a list of celebrated fighters that include World lightweight champion Diego Corrales and IBF 168 lb. titleholder Jeff Lacy.
MANNY GETS NEEDED PROTECTION
The 39-3, (31 KO’s) Pacquiao has already been guaranteed revenge against Erik Morales, who defeated him last March in a thrilling 12 round bout. But, in order to get to that juncture, Pacquiao must defeat the well-traveled Mexican Velazquez, who can fight a little (42-10-2, 31 KO’s). In Shaw, Pacquiao adds an experienced promoter who will watch his back against Top Rank’s Morales (48-2, 34 KO’s). Promoter Bob Arum isn’t afraid to proclaim Morales as one of (if not) his most prized fighters. In the future, expect Pacquiao is be featured in his own shows, in order to maximize Pacquiao’s star power.
AN EMOTIONAL PROMOTER DURING ANY FIGHT
Gary Shaw is always on his feet whenever his fighter is doing well. During Diego Corrales’ thrilling comeback win, Shaw, who was seated in Corrales corner, looked like an emotional wreck, as if it were him who was fighting those hard rounds. Unlike Bob Arum or Don King, who hardly show any emotion during big fights, Shaw embraced Corrales in the ring.
MANNY A PROVEN PPV COMMODITY
Pacquiao’s PPV battle with Morales is currently the second highest bought show this year (second to Winky Wright’s dominant win against Felix Trinidad). As well as being the richest, most popular celebrity in the Philippines, Pacquiao has built a huge fan following on the west coast and is a household name amongst Filipino-Americans.
CAN MANNY Although, Pacquiao hasn’t proven his marketability in the states on his own (his last promoter never gave him a chance), fights in the San Francisco Bay Area would certainly sell. Also, a future fight (rematch) with recognized World 130 lb. champion Marco Antonio Barrera, this would be off the hook!
