This weeks bag is chock full of questions to George about his Cotto Vs Mayweather piece that appeared on HBO last week. In addition, we have the Manny Pacquiao crowd as always, and an assorted bunch of other questions.
Isn’t there some way we could get rid of the whole draw concept? Who wants to see a great fight like this and get a DRAW out of it? That would be so unsatisfying to not only the boxers but the whole world.
That is why there two men in the ring. One comes out a winner and the other a loser. You don’t see a draw in basketball, baseball, or football (in the reg. season). Couldn’t some one come up with a way to where there would be an extra round if it came to a draw, or maybe a forth judge. Haven’t you ever notice when a draw happens all the fans in the building BOOOOOOOOO. There is a reason for this, A DRAW SUCKS!!!!!!!. Take a survey, see how many people agree. Thank you for your time

That’s the deal boxing lives with every single day. I don’t make the rules.
A draw or an NC non-ruling decision when you think about it makes about as much sense as instituting an additional round to have 13 to break the tiebreaker tiebreaker, and leaving it at fifteen rounds hadn’t solved the problem.
Overtime and extra innings aren’t going to happen in boxing.
However, if you’re that determined about it I suggest you write a letter to all four of the governing bodies: WBC, WBO, IBF, and the WBA who’ve had a wealth of experience with these things; and see what they’ll have to tell you about it.
I wouldn’t overrule in the eventuality that if you were to send a letter to Senator McCain there for that matter when he goes upcoming to the 109th congress soon for his agendas, you just might find yourself having something to contribute.
Come on there is no one who can beat PBF Cotto wouldn’t even touch him.

Listen, in the past tense sense Ricky Hatton is a huge Miguel Cotto fan, but even being his most ardent fan; I doubt its gonna help him in beating Floyd, and to denigrate Ricky even further in comparing his speed to PBF has to be carried on fast forward for a much too incredible feat to believe. Not for anything, but Ricky Hatton would struggle against Vivian Harris, and we all know what happened with Carlos Maussa when MIguel Cotto touched him.

Even though Miguel Cotto is the most complete fighter in the history of Puerto Rican boxing, do you think he needs to consider a change in his training staff? Personally, I don’t think his uncle/trainer Evangelisto Cotto has the experience and knowledge to take Cotto to the next level. Your thought?

Yes I think that a family that works together like so many in the past has done works.
I would not categorize Miguel Angel Cotto as the most complete fighter Puerto Rican boxing history has simply because the historical records are being set. That isn’t anything for anyone to say or not to say until your career is over to see about.
There have been family members before who have represented fighters. So if it isn’t broke why fix it?
My thoughts about Mayweather fighting Cotto is that Mayweather would walk through Cotto like he did Gatti. It would be just another mismatch. Cotto is indeed a good fighter, but his speed isn’t anywhere close to Mayweather’s.
Not to mention that Cotto’s chin is questionable. He got hurt earlier this year from a right hand from Damarcus Corley, and was also hurt when he fought Abdulaev a couple of months back. As we all know that Mayweather has demonstrated great speed and punching power. So Cotto’s ability to take a punch would have to improve.

Hand speed and power doesn’t always get the same results with raw power and matching speed. That’s why this match is the most talked about fight.
Not to denigrate anything Corley did or did not do against Cotto, it was Miguel’s condition that sustained him in that fight, in spite of DeMarcus having gotten knocked out on Miguel Cotto’s worst night!
Mayweather may have looked a bit piqued against Victoriano Sosa to some, but I happen to think that was one of the finest PBF performances made in a long time, including his two other fights with Jose Luis Castillo.
You simply have to make your case stronger on Miguel Cotto not being able to absorb a punch, when one of the higher percentile wise punchers couldn’t dent him in Randall Bailey.

I am an admirer of Manny Pacquiao. He is courageous and like to fight the best. He has the powerful left but only up to this. I think his fundamentals are not complete. What do you think?

I couldn’t find much about Manny Pacquiao lacking in his boxing department to suggest anything missing. However, fighters mostly know what they have to do adjusting varying from opponent to opponent with.

That’s a good question on the first one, and one that would be perfect for the RSR discussion board for you to join in on the fun to post. I could give you several fighters in each division that could qualify under that same punching power category.
Unbelievable comparison, though to make Manny into a heavyweight in any era would be like placing Little Brutus up against Andre The Giant.
If you hadn’t exactly known whom the strongest puncher was in that division in the nineties by now, shame on you.

I honestly hope all smaller fighters compete competitively in those areas.
Actually smaller 108-119 LBS haven’t left the Asian-Pacific rim competing all the while, and so has Asia as a whole. That’s why Manny Pacquiao has become so popular for moving up in weight for being a real gamer. Don’t think for a minute Filipinos hadn’t competed at higher weights than 130-pounds either.
Back in 1992 there was a WBA Junior Welterweight Champion who came from the Philippines named Morris East. My answer is that as generations go forward, they’re getting bigger. Nationalities have little or nothing to do with it.
You know George I think Miguel Cotto is a great fighter no doubt but he just isn’t ready for these type of event Mayweather will retire him if this match takes place.
It will be like the Bernard Hopkins and Trinidad match up it was suicide and you saw the guy didn’t even return to the ring until 2 or 3 Years later what do you think George are you with me

I wouldn’t be categorizing MAC too prematurely if I had said so hastily for Miguel Cotto to take some time off, and then see about it later; that couldn’t be way out there asking Miguel detractors for a concession to make would it?
I’ll be one of the first to say that slowing down Miguel’s activity level is the best way to having the nearest defeatist attitude be written in the books. He needs action. And that said he’d be the most active of fighting champions by today’s standards ranking him up there. In answering whether he’s ready? Yes, and very able.

It can be what everyone wants to know about the Cotto-Mayweather outcome is on how close it could possibly get to be so.
Now I don’t speak for PBF preferences without asking first. What I have to go on is that if enough fans speak out on this particular match being carried out, and then we could all be a lot closer to arrive to a much more plausible answer to it.

You have just asked the 64 thousand dollar question. PBF is no doubt, a great fighter, but I think he lacks charisma as say a Mike Tyson has. Also, he is on both sides of the fence with his good guy & Bad Boy persona. Finally, I think a lot of folks get upset with him because of his out of the ring antics and I hope that he gets it together in that department because he is good for boxing when he is in the ring, but can hurt it outside.

I think Lacy beats him and actually stops him when they do fight. Joe C is a decent fighter, but has never fought the tough guys who are going to bring tons of pressure to him and power. Lacy does both after the third round or so. Once Joe gets a taste of the lefthook and bodywork Jeff will bring, game over!

For a long time you yanks have put British fighter down, what you forget is that for the size of our country we produce as many if not more decent fighter than the U.S. we had the best heavy weight for the best part of 10 years in Lewis, we still have the best super middle in Joe Calzagie, hey and lets not forget our own Mr. Hatton. So Mr. Lacy and Mr. Mayweather bring your selves over to England and lets get it on.

You see this is exactly why we revere a fighter who may not have the experience like a Joe Calzaghe has, should one defeat the Welshman who’s to say has the lesser expertise. I’ve heard the same about some who make excuses mate for their fighter in losing, and there is nothing patriotic about it.
I liked Alan Minter as a fighter, but the fact that he cut easily did not scuttle me away from knowing his natural boxing abilities either.
If you really want to compare your set of apples to someone else’s – start with naming the numbers of Latino World Boxing Champions, in both amateurs and pro, including heavyweight. Now it doesn’t take such a surrealistic approach at America for yourself or anyone else to understand those smaller countries make up for bigger categories.
My own opinion is if Spain had abruptly stopped paying yearly into British Parliament their gold, Lennox Lewis might’ve been in America by now.
Floyd will tear cotto and judah to shreds lets remember judah or cotto never beat an a+ fighter that’s a mismatch against either one of those guys. they are overrated bums and once exposed to Floyd’s brilliance the truth will be told.

George, I totally agree with you in all your arguments of this piece. My question for you is the following; outside Miguel and PBF, you’ll have to consider Ricky Hatton a worthy opponent having beat Kosta Tszyu. Now, do you think Kostya is still in the mix of the best 140 lbs. at this time? since Vivian Harris disappointing lost to Moussa, there isn’t any other names making noise in the 140 lbs. Do you foresee a meeting between Cotto and Tszyu before the most awaited Cotto-Mayweather Jr. bout?

I couldn’t have said it better myself. Miguel Cotto has hacked away at the activity level for more long enough times to be in the exact position that he are today.
Hatton may still have to face K.T., so if this match weren’t coming around until 2006 for Cotto, nobody would be too surprised about that. I wouldn’t hold my breath about Ricky Hatton however, cause he seems to be the frontrunner pretty much for right now. There’s plenty time for these guys to fight each other within the sixteen or seventeen months to sustain 140 LBS afloat.
