A rabbi, a Filipino and a guy named “Money” walk into a bar… Sadly there’s no joke to go along with this.
The fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao is officially off (again). Pacquiao is instead moving forward in planning a fight against super welterweight champion and ordained rabbi Yuri Foreman.
That’s right, Pacquiao is leaving behind a purse in the realm of $12 million to fight a guy who won his first world title two months ago and whose name generates more publicity than his fighting style (Yuri is Yiddish for George).
This, of course, is the result of both Mayweather and Pacquiao’s camps being unable to reach a deal on the issue of drug testing.
But if history tells us anything, it’s that any dispute in sports comes back to one central point – money.
Either Floyd feels like he isn’t getting his or Pacquiao isn’t willing to put it where his mouth is, but everything about this reeks of issues with money.
Not superstition, not steroids, not weight classes or any of those shenanigans.
It’s a joke, and I’m not laughing.
