Wink sides with Pacquiao in Mayweather debacle
GL: It’s been a little while since we had you on Boxingtalk. What’s the latest and greatest and when might we expect you back in the ring? “Well you know, I’m looking to do something hopefully in late February or March and get back in there. I think there’s people out there ripe for the taking and I want to be the one to take them.”
GL: The last time we spoke you talked about going back down to 54, is that still the plan or will you campagn at middleweight? “
Winky Wright: “I’m still trying to go back to 54, that’s still the intention. I want to end my career where I started so I’m going to get to 54 and give the fans what they want.”
GL: If Paul Williams and Kelly Pavlik wind up fighting at some time in 2010, does a fight with Sergio Martinez, the best junior middleweight in the world, interest you?
WW: Martinez did real good. He fought his game plan and you can’t take nothing away from him. He looked good that night when he fought Williams.”
GL: Do you have an opionion on the Pacquiao-Mayweather debacle?
WW: “Yeah I got an opinion and I don’t think they care nothing about it. I think they need to go ahead and make that fight now. I think if they go out and fight somebody else and lose, or don’t look as impressive, it takes a lot out of the fight. The fans and everybody wants to see the fight now, so I think it needs to happen now.”
GL: Do you think Mayweather has the right to ask for additional testing not required by the commission?
WW: “Nah I don’t think he has the right to ask for that. Why should he have to do something different? If he’s going to do what is required and he has no history of breaking the rules then that’s that. Mayweather feels that they doing something extra and I think they should go ahead and get that out the way, but I don’t think they should make Manny do that. If he’s passing all the tests required by the normal physical then they should fight.”
GL: The last time we spoke you mentioned a possible return against Brewer in February, where does that stand?
WW: “I don’t think it’s going to happen now, right now I’m ready to fight whoever they say is the best and move on from there. I’m looking to take over again at 154.”
GL: Can you still make 54 comfy at your advanced age?
WW: “Yeah, I’m doing it right now. I’ve been training and getting right. I’ve been putting the work in and I’m watching what I eat, so anything they need from me I’m coming to getit. My goals for this year G, is to dominate my division and to once again become undisputed at 54.”
GL: Martinez is the strongest title holder at 54, does that make him who you want most?
WW: “If that’s the case then that’s who it gotta be.”
GL: So how does that fight play out?
WW: “A great fight for the fans, I’m going to win, but he’s a slick tough fighter, but it’ll be a great match for the fans.”
GL: Closing thoughts?
WW: “It’s my time! 2010. Winky Wright undisputed, again.”
