Worse than cancer: Golden Boy’s piece of Pacquiao

Imagine the screaming, the howling, the outrage if the Indianapolis Colts were playing the San Diego Chargers in the Super Bowl and it was divulged that one of the owners had a piece of both teams.

Under NFL rules, it could never happen but just suppose it did. There would be calls for Congressional investigations and more.

Or what if Boston and the Yankees were contesting the American League title, and it became public knowledge that Larry Lucchino of the Red Sox had an equity interest, a financial percentage, in what he likes to call “the Evil Empire.”

There would be weeping, gnashing of teeth and a move to take away baseball’s antitrust exemption.

Yet, in boxing as we sit here today and a Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao is about to get back on track or remain in the breakdown lane for March 13 or May, Mayweather’s self-chosen representative, Golden Boy, has attacked and besmirched the name and reputation of Pacman.

Oscar de la Hoya’s company has no paper on the undefeated Mayweather. GBP was hired at will and can be fired by Money May for any reason. Mayweather doesn’t even need to give a reason to dump the Goldens and get their grubby hands out of his pockets.

It’s Mayweather Uber Alles, even to the detriment and back of the superstar bus treatment given to the confused Sugar Shane Mosley, at the Wilshire Boulevard offices of Richie Rich Schaefer and Oscar’s other acolytes.

Respected Pinoy reporter Ronnie Nathanielsz alleges that Schaefer told him face to face some months ago that Manny is a drug using cheater.

Schaefer denies the statement but why would Nathanielsz make this up?

And it is consistent with the whispering campaign, the “Manny Cheats” campaign that has turned into shouting without proof, being conducted by the whole Mayweather motley crew.

Here Bob Arum can take some blame. And so can the often august but not in this case Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Letting GBP own a piece of the promotional pie on Pacquiao has always been wrong and it is an obscenity when the Goldens represent a Pacquiao adversary.

This situation, which dates back to the out of court settlement between Arum’s Top Rank and Oscar’s company when both had signed contracts on Pacman, is like a festering sore on your leg.

You ignore it and it festers more and more.

You finally go to a doctor and he says that leg must be amputated.

At that point, does it matter whether the causation was a mosquito bite, diabetes or cancer?
