IT’S JUST two days to go before Christmas, so better whip out your list.
Check it twice, mind you.
I was thinking of coming out with yet another whacky Christmas wish list for this season when I realized I really have only one wish this Christmas.
Sure I got a lot, but those are for “personal consumption.”
For this section, there’s no need to ask for P50 million for the rubber oval—it’s coming.
Or for a PCCL game, we’ve had that.
Football? Nah! Forgetaboutit.
This Christmas, my dream is for The Dream.
That one day, we’d be writing about his homecoming.
That he’d be able to walk and talk.
That he’d be able to join his four kids.
At home.
Gorres’s dream of becoming a world champion ended the night before Manny Pacquiao achieved his piece of history.
What happened to him is one of the negatives of boxing. We all love a good fight, but sometimes a great fight isn’t good for the boxers.
After winning his fight, Gorres apologized to his manager, Michael Aldeguer, for getting careless in the final round.
That was when he got hit.
When they were walking out of the ring, Gorres suddenly blurted out that he couldn’t move his legs.
It was to be his last spoken words.
ALA promotions’s Dennis Canete said it was a scene out of a medical-drama.
A team of doctors and nurses swarmed the boxer the moment he got to the hospital. They even forgot to let Dennis leave the room, they were that focused on saving a life.
Michael says it was the worst moment of his life. Gorres wasn’t just a boxer under their promotional company.
He was like family.
He grew up with them.
It’s been over a month since that incident and though The Dream is no longer in any danger, he’s still looking at months of rehabilitation.
His wife Datchess is now in the US with him, while their four kids are left at home.
This Christmas, the brood of six will be separated.
I met his wife a few weeks before she left, and she’s quite a character.
She was also an athlete in her own right, a track star who trained at the ALA gym.
That’s where they met.
“Natuhog sa javelin,” were her exact words.
She even laughed at Z’s nickname, Butchoy, the first time they met.
The two are together again, now in Las Vegas.
According to the Las Vegas Sun, which had an interesting article on their reunion, the two communicate primarily by writing.
“He looks much better than when I got here,” she told the paper. “The problem is his left side is paralyzed.”
The report said, “No one knows how far Z’s recovery will go. He will likely be paralyzed for the rest of his life, but there’s no timetable for when he may be able to speak or breathe on his own again. Gorres will never fight again.”
