Gorres handlers lay out plan for boxer’s stardom

THE MANAGEMENT team of world-ranked superflyweight contender Z Gorres is hoping to make the flashy Cebuano ringster a legitimate world champion.

High in the agenda of Gorres’ promoter Sammy Gello-ani is to win Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) 115-lb belt first then work on one or two meaningful fights in the United States in completing the Cebuano’s career for the year.

Current OPBF ruler Masayuki Arinaga is slated to defend his crown against 8th ranked contender Daisuke Maruyama in an All-Japan title fight scheduled on Aug. 22 at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.

The 25-year-old Gorres, with a record of 19-1-1 with 11 KO’s, is the mandatory contender of the OPBF crown.

Gorres is slated to fight Thai journeyman Deeden Kengkarun in a 10-round non-title fight tomorrow at the San Andres Gym in Manila.

“First things first, Gorres needs to win this Saturday before planning on our next move. If there will be an offer for a world crown, we’ll take it. But right now, our goal is to win the OPBF belt before anything else,” said Gello-ani in yesterday’s press preview at the Wild Card Gym in Para?aque.

In his most recent fight, Gorres stopped Filipino-American Glenn Donaire in the opening round of their match which served as one of the undercards of the classic 12-round battle between Manny Pacquiao and Erik Morales last March 20 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Gorres has scored eight successive victories since losing his RP flyweight belt to Edgar Rodrigo via a 9th round stoppage two years ago.

Gorres is managed by the tandem of Cebuano sportsman Tony Aldeguer and eminent lawyer Rudy Salud, the founding secretary general of the World Boxing Council (WBC).
