Town honors Mayol

NEWLY-crowned World Boxing Council (WBC) light flyweight titlist Rodel Mayol will be honored by the municipality of San Fernando today.

After becoming the newest world champion of the Philippines, Mayol, who was born and raised in San Fernando, will be honored by the municipality, headed by Mayor Lakambini Reluya, for his accomplishments in pro boxing.

“San Fernando will honor Mayol for his achievement. San Fernando is very proud of what he has achieved, becoming the newest world champion,” said San Fer-nando consultant Neil Papas in an interview by Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

The 28-year-old Mayol will be honored in the municipal hall of San Fernando. After that he will be in a motorcade around the municipality that will start at the town proper and will end in Barangay Sangat, San Fernando.

Mayol will then visit, his last stop, the place where he grew up, Barangay Tubod.

After failing in four title tiffs, Mayol finally became a world champion after winning the WBC light flyweight strap via a second-round stoppage over tough Mexican world titleholder Edgar Sosa in Mexico last month.
