Representatives of Top Rank, Home Box Office and Golden Boy Promotions will be kicking the tires at the Cowboys Stadium with owner Jerry Jones one day this week and nobody is talking about it on or off the record.
Their silence is deafening. I understand it and respect it. While I’m personally only about 30 miles away from the Cowboys Stadium, I might as well be thousands of miles away.
They have a lot to do and work out. They have to see if it would even work at the $1.2 billion stadium, the largest domed building in the world.
Then they have to get the money worked out. I’m thinking a $13 million guaranteed site fee – maybe the largest guarantee ever – Above the guarantee the costs could soar another five million dollars for Jones.
Sponsorships will be a major source of revenue for Jones. Official beer, soft drink, hotel, fast food restaurants, potato chip, Internet dating site, steakhouse, gentleman’s club, airline and casino along with many other sponsors both national and local in nature must be addressed.
Jerry Jones has to make back all his money and prove the worth of the event to the sponsors in about a four- hour window on the night of March 13, 2010.
Dallas – Fort Worth is about the seventh largest metropolitan area in the country with 6.1 million residents (new census numbers come out in April) so the ranking could actually be higher.
My next question would be does Cowboys Stadium get a blackout of DFW to protect its live gate? Maybe even as far north as Oklahoma and south to Austin? Meaning no pay – per-view in the nation’s No. 5 media market? Maybe he won”t even get a blackout.
Hoever a blackout would include no closed-circuit broadcast of the fight in sports bars, restaurants, dance halls, taquerias, and gentleman’s clubs.
These and other factors will be discussed and I sure wish I were a fly on the wall.
